Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Sunshine State Conference has postponed all scheduled athletics competitions for the fall 2020 sports season.
With the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes and all those in our campus communities as the highest priority, the Sunshine State Conference Presidents Council has announced that all scheduled competitions for the fall 2020 season will be postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Rollins endorsed a unanimous recommendation of the Conference athletic directors that it is simply not possible to hold intercollegiate competitions safely in the current environment.
The decision affects Tars men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Conference is committed to exploring creative approaches and alternatives, including the possibility of conducting fall sport competition and Conference championships in the second semester. Spring sports including lacrosse, tennis, golf, baseball, softball, and rowing will not compete in the fall semester.
Additionally, waterski and sailing, which both normally participate in fall competition, will not take place as scheduled. Further decisions regarding winter and spring competition as well as non-Sunshine State Conference sports will be made by the College at a later date.
Students who are receiving athletic grants as part of their financial aid package will not see their aid reduced.
The opportunity for conditioning, strength training, and other practice opportunities in all sports will be permitted, provided health and safety conditions support such activities.
“Athletics is an essential dimension of a Rollins liberal arts education and the mission of educating students to become global citizens and responsible leaders,” says President Grant Cornwell. “Athletic staff, including coaches and administrators, will work to engage our student-athletes in meaningful, but different, ways throughout the fall 2020 semester.”
