Professor of Studio Art Dawn Roe presented her current work at the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) 2022 conference in Barcelona, Spain. The theme of this year’s conference was “The Possibles,” encompassing a wide range of far-reaching events that inform artist sensibilities.

ISEA is one of the most important annual events worldwide dedicated to the crossroads where art, design, science, technology, and society meet. The event has been held over 25 times all across the globe, serving as a meeting point for artists, scientists, technologists, and theorists to share their research along with their latest prototypes, technological developments, or artistic works linked to science and technology.

Roe’s project, DESCENT ≈ An Atlas of Relation, looks to fish—which have occupied our planet for millions of years in a constant struggle for survival—as an entryway to visualize the entanglements of interspecies relation through time-based imaging systems referencing the imperceptible slowness of evolutionary processes.

Digital photographs, scans, and video documentation are combined with UV-sensitive direct-contact printing methods that require multiple minutes, hours, or days to construct an image of/with the natural world. The resulting visuals consider how our bodies, along with fish and other organisms, find ways of being and living together within the midst of a globally shifting climate that impacts our shared resources and, subsequently, our relations.

More information about the project, including images, can be found on Roe’s website.
