Radio Interview Discusses Transformational Moment for Rollins Museum of Art

Leslie Anderson, the Bruce A. Beal Executive Director of the Rollins Museum of Art, was interviewed on Perspectives, a community affairs program that airs on WDBO and other stations across Central Florida. Anderson discussed how the museum’s move to downtown Winter Park in 2028 represents a transformational moment for the college and the broader community.

Anderson said the move will expand the museum’s role while maintaining its academic mission. Situated adjacent to the Alfond Inn and within walking distance of Rollins College, the new museum will continue serving students while becoming more visible and accessible to residents and visitors.

“This is a really significant move for us,” Anderson said. While the museum remains “devoted to serving campus and creating opportunities for students to learn through objects,” she said the new location will also strengthen connections with the wider public.

The Rollins Museum of Art houses nearly 6,000 objects and is known for its strengths in global contemporary art, American art, and historical works. Anderson said the new museum will continue showcasing the permanent collection through rotating thematic exhibitions. The inaugural exhibition will explore “love and human connection,” inspired by a recent acquisition: a video work by internationally recognized artist Ragnar Kjartansson.

At the same time, Anderson said the museum is embracing a broader identity as a center for artistic experimentation and collaboration. Rather than relying primarily on traveling exhibitions, the museum plans to work directly with artists on projects that debut in Winter Park.

“One will be showcasing our amazing collection,” Anderson said of the museum’s dual mission, while the second focus will involve “thoughtful collaborations with artists that debut at the museum.” She added that the institution aims to become “an incubator for new ideas” and a place for “experimental approaches” to exhibiting art.

As preparations for the move continue, the museum’s collection will remain accessible through its longstanding partnership with The Alfond Inn, where between 100 and 350 works from the permanent collection are typically on display. Anderson described the arrangement as unique because museum staff curate, interpret and oversee the artwork in an active partnership with the hotel.

The downtown move is also expected to grow community engagement. Anderson noted that 85% of museum visitors are currently first-time guests, a remarkably high figure for an academic museum. “It is also a gift to the community,” she said. “We are open for all, campus and community alike.” She added that the new location will encourage more spontaneous and repeat visits while serving as “a gateway” connecting people from around the world to Rollins College and its cultural resources.
