Fetscherin Comments on EU Proposal for Canada on FOX 35

The European Commission's proposal to make Canada its first associate member has sparked international debate, prompting reaction from Washington and economic analysis from academic experts.

Fetscherin pointed out that political enthusiasm currently outweighs the legal framework, noting that EU Article 49 strictly limits full membership to European nations. Examining the structural dynamic, Fetscherin said, "Well, I think there's political ambitions which are well ahead of the legal architecture."

Addressing Canada's economic position, Fetscherin explained that the nation faces short-term dependence on the United States, which currently receives roughly 70 percent of Canada’s exports. However, he observed that persistent trade pressure from Washington could alter this dynamic. “Canada is clearly dependent on the United States way more than the US is on Canada, but if the US pressures and weaponizes dependency today, this could lead in the long run to some kind of diversification and independence,” Fetscherin said.

Regarding Washington's threats to retaliate against both Canada and Europe, Fetscherin warned that punitive measures could backfire and destabilize global markets. Discussing potential U.S. leverage, he remarked, "I'm not sure this is going to solve the problem really. I think it's just going to create more chaos and unpredictability in the marketplace, which ultimately hurts everybody, including the United States."

Fetscherin concluded that while a formal alliance of middle powers has not yet taken shape, Canada's engagement with the EU reflects a strategic effort to insulate its economy from unilateral tariff threats and build long-term economic resilience.
