Join us for a special event celebrating the music of our most beloved alumnus, Fred Rogers ’51 ’74H.
The Scoop
Rollins will pay tribute to its most beloved alumnus, Fred Rogers ’51 ’74H, with a special program celebrating his music—from the iconic “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” to selections from an opera he wrote while at Rollins entitled “Josephine the Short-Necked Giraffe.”
Rogers’ nephew and Rollins music professor Dan Crozier is choosing the musical selections and will assist on the program, which will take place in the College’s Tiedtke Concert Hall. Rogers’ degree from Rollins was in music composition, the same subject Crozier has taught at Rollins for the past 20 years.
A collection of Rollins faculty, alumni, and more than 80 Rollins music students will be joined by artists-in-residence Voctave for the event. Founded by Jamey Ray ’06, who teaches music technology and recording at Rollins, Voctave is a renowned a cappella ensemble known for its arrangements of Disney songs, pop music, showtunes, and holiday favorites. Gloria Cook—music professor, pianist, and longtime friend of Rogers—will play his senior recital piece, “Variations on Chopin.”
Jazz legend Johnny Costa’s original jazz arrangements from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood will be played by the musicians in the Rollins program, which will feature a range of songs from the iconic show that aired for more than 30 years.
