Advice for Students During Critical First Weeks on Campus

As students return to college campuses across Central Florida, Meyer said research consistently shows that students' academic, social and behavioral habits during their first weeks on campus often shape their overall college experience. With classes beginning Aug. 24, she encouraged students to focus on building a strong foundation from day one.

Meyer advised students to pay close attention during orientation and advising sessions, where they will be introduced to campus resources and support services. She also stressed the importance of academic planning, recommending that students review their syllabi early and map out major assignments and projects before the semester becomes busy.

Beyond academics, Meyer highlighted the value of campus involvement. Students who engage in clubs, organizations, traditions and athletic events are more likely to feel connected to the campus community and persist through challenges, she said. Rollins offers numerous opportunities for students to get involved and develop meaningful relationships during their first weeks on campus.

Meyer also reminded students that colleges provide a wide range of support services, including counseling and wellness resources, and encouraged them to seek help when needed. Drawing on 26 years of experience working with college students, she said those who approach college with an open mind, take healthy risks and actively engage with their community tend to thrive.

For parents, Meyer recommended establishing healthy boundaries and allowing students to take greater ownership of problem-solving. While families can offer guidance, she said, students should be empowered to lead their own college experience and personal growth.

"Every week things will get a little bit better," Meyer said, encouraging both students and parents to embrace the transition and remember they are not alone.
