The publication recognized the professor’s contribution to the Orlando theater scene via her Latinx performance group, Descolonizarte TEATRO.

Nadia Garzon ’14MLS, an adjunct professor of theater, has been a longtime staple in the Orlando theater community, and now she’s working to make that community more accessible to Latinx performers and audiences through her nonprofit organization Descolonizarte TEATRO.

Garzon’s career as an actor, director, and voice-over performer collides with her work as an immigrant rights activist through the troupe, which has been offering Spanish language programming since 2019. Orlando Arts Magazine recently sat down with Garzon to discuss the organization’s mission.

“For us, decolonization is a call to recognize and return to our roots,” Garzon told the magazine in reference to Descolonizarte TEATRO’s name. “We want to produce and consume theater that represents us so we can see ourselves and our stories on stage.”

At Rollins, Garzon teaches courses on Latin American theater and theater as a tool for social change.
