What You Will Learn

Our Mission

The faculty members of the Department of Education’s primary purpose is to educate students with a deep liberal arts foundation of knowledge, skills, and dispositions, and with a strong foundation in understanding student learning, schooling issues, and forms of pedagogy for teaching in diverse classrooms.  It is through the combination of those two interrelated strains that our graduates become knowledgeable teachers who pursue meaningful lives and productive careers.

Global Citizenship

Global Citizenship

The Education Department developed summer Field Studies in several countries to better meet the mission of educating global citizens.  Before traveling, you will gain a historical, socio-economic, cultural, and political understanding of the country to which you will travel.  While you may teach in schools abroad, our intention is that you engage in deep intercultural learning from your immersion in educational and social agencies.

In addition, we created a course titled “Global Perspectives of Education.”  The course attracts many students not majoring in Education, who want to learn more about the world.  We have a shared commitment to globalize our curriculum by enhancing our curricular offerings on and off campus.  We have high expectations for you and all our students who travel on all Field Studies to act responsibly in the foreign environment and show appreciation for the culture.

Responsible Leadership

Responsible Leadership

The Department of Education has strong relationships with local schools.  You will intern in public schools before student teaching, and for an entire semester of student teaching.  Full-time faculty supervise and provide support throughout your internships.  You will be an ambassador of Rollins College, and we require that you demonstrate leadership qualities.  You will arrive to school each day with purposeful plans for teaching, work to create positive and collaborative relationships, and communicate well with students, caregivers, and faculty colleagues.  We expect you to serve in leadership roles when you become a professional teacher.

Meaningful Lives & Productive Careers

Meaningful Lives & Productive Careers

The goal of our program is to prepare you for professional teacher certification so that you can teach in public schools anywhere in the USA, as well as overseas.  The Department has a total of 14 Florida state-approved programs, and our graduates who seek teaching positions are prepared for the challenges of teaching. We believe that community engagement experiences empower you to develop a meaningful life and have a productive career.
