Debra Wellman has been an influential member of the Rollins community since she arrived on campus in 2000 as an assistant professor of education. She holds a PhD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Toledo, a master’s of education administration degree from Eastern Illinois University, and a bachelor of science degree from Illinois College. Wellman served as associate dean of the faculty, interim dean of A&S, interim dean of Holt, dean of the College of Professional Studies and Associate Provost.

Her academic career has been distinguished by numerous accolades, including being nominated to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, serving as president of the Florida Reading Association, as well as authoring several published articles and presenting at national and international conferences on the topics of literacy and student teaching field experiences. She received two teaching awards, the Hugh F. McKean Award for Outstanding Teaching Skills, Most Recognized Professor Award.

Dr. Wellman was invited to serve as the Director of the Christina A. Johnson Center for Effective Teaching in 2016. “My vision for the Center for Effective Teaching is to provide a variety of faculty development opportunities that interest beginning faculty all the way to faculty winning teaching awards.” Wellman’s greatest rewards in this position center around helping faculty find fulfillment and enjoyment in their college teaching careers. Her door is open to anyone interested in exploring a new teaching technique, technology, or course design.
