Rollins College Sustainability Program was selected for the third time to receive the Keep Winter Park Beautiful and Sustainable Green School Grant!

This years' proposal is for a Shoreline Restoration project on Lake Virginia with native plants that will include volunteers and student participation from such spring classes as Springs, Swamps and Sinkholes.

Past Green School Grant proposals included the support for a Bike Shop for maintenance and repair of bikes, both personal and bike program, and for support of a bike safety manual and workshop for the campus community.

Recycling Pilot Program - suspended during Covid 19

Initiated by the lead sustainability coordinator 2018, Rollins is working towards eliminating plastic liners in small recycling and landfill bins by removing these small bins and replacing them with one large bin in academic and administrative areas.  Using a large reusable bag for the recycling bin, this initiative could successfully eliminate the bulk of small plastic liners used on the campus.  This pilot program is currently suspended during this academic year due to Covid 19.

Fair Trade 

Rollins College became a fair trade-designated college in spring 2013 and the announcement was made during the Earth Day celebration. With the City of Winter Park as a designated fair trade town, this community is becoming greener and, as stated in the college’s mission statement, committed to social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Rollins College won the Winter Park Commute Challenge in 2017!

Rollins participants logged the most commute trips during this challenge by biking, carpooling, walking and riding SunRail. Rollins faculty, staff and students continue to participate in local efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.

Urban Farm

The first urban farm is up and running! Started as a student independent study that grew into a proposal to the college, this farm is used educationally by professors, classes, and campus groups. The farm also has a production component to provide produce to the campus dining areas.

Habitat for Humanity textbook drive:

The Rollins Sustainability Program has partnered with Habitat for Humanity for almost a decade reducing the amount of textbooks that wind up in the landfill instead of on bookshelves!  Textbooks that can not be returned to the Rollins Bookstore are collected at the end of each semester and are either sold locally or recycled.

LEED buildings on campus

Rollins College has been moving forward with LEED certification. The student residential hall, Strong Hall, has been LEED certified. The 2015 renovated Bush Science Center has been awarded LEED Gold Certification!!

SunRail

SunRail is our local commuter rail system in the Greater Orlando area. Service began on May 1, 2014. Phase 1 comprises 31 miles (50 km) with 12 stations along the former CSX Transportation "A" Line, connecting Volusia County and Orange County through downtown Orlando. Phase 2, opening in 2017, added a new northern terminus at DeLand and four more stations southward, terminating at Poinciana in Osceola County. Formerly known as "Central Florida Commuter Rail", the SunRail system is financed by the state and federal governments and the counties it serves. SunRail is Florida's second commuter rail system after Miami's Tri-Rail.
