Traveling Tommy Award: Rick Bommelje

"I hear students, colleagues, staff, and faculty say time and time again that they are forever changed by their time learning together with Dr. Bommelje." — Tiffany Griffin, Director, Academic Advising & Support Services

WOW Spotlight: Travis & Alexa Ray

On December 14, the Service Excellence Team recognized Alexa and Travis Ray with a Big Wow award for their ongoing acts of generosity and service, including hosting students for holiday dinners and celebrations in their home, providing groceries to a student in need, and helping lead efforts to raise money for a colleague in need.

Above & Beyond

After moving the entire Hamilton Holt School and setting up multiple events in one week, it’s clear that the current transport team—Jerome Brown, Khris Lewis, and Ramon Robledo—is a band of on-the-ball men who tackle each job with a great attitude and cheetah-like speed.

To: Meredith Hein
Meredith and I collaborate every year on classroom visits for my transfer students. This morning, when another guest speaker was sick, Meredith stepped up not only to deliver her own content, but also covered relevant material for all offices in the Community Alignment without missing a beat. She is the ultimate educator! I wanted to share my appreciation for her dedication not only to CLCE, but her division as a whole. Thank you Meredith! You are appreciated.

To: Tysheika Fisher
Tysheika is helping us coordinate a redesign of the Carnegie transactional hub lobby to provide a better service experience for students. Within a few days of our initial request, she had already visited our space, made suggestions, and arranged for installers to come do the first stage of our furniture redesign. The project is still underway, and she is proactively communicating with our team about next steps and timelines. She has handled our offices' (often conflicting and ever changing) demands with all the pillars of service excellence--responsive, respectful, collaborative, and competent. Thank you Tysheika!

I have had the opportunity to work with the Office of the Bursar's team to help advise students and their parents through some very difficult decisions and I was so proud of how the Bursar's Office staff worked with these students and their families all the while having to remind them of their bill. They did a great job listening to each student's crisis and providing advisement on alternative payment options. They provide compassion and empathy in their work. Thank you, Office of the Bursar!

To: Cliff Manspeaker
With the recent new branding that went live a little over a month ago now, I had been reaching out to Cliff with multiple questions and requests for assistance. I was continuously emailing and calling him to help with different tasks: redesigning our welcome email to hew hires, uploading the new logo to all communication templates, ensuring our colors on the website match the external side and identifying any other areas that needed to be updated. I am sure that I was not only one reaching out to him directly asking for assistance so that is why I want to recognize him. He went above in his communications with me, kept me informed of where he was at during the project and provided guidance as to what we can expect. He collaborated with others from his team to sure our site was updated quickly and was there to meet and fix anything we could not do over the phone. Thank you Cliff (and team) for making this transition seamless and continuing to keep us updated as new edits rollout. You are always a pleasure to work with!!

To: Udeth Lugo
I was in the Campus Center yesterday when I ran into Udeth having lunch with a former Upward Bound student named Cedric Gaskin. Cedric graduated from Upward Bound in the late 80s. He currently lives in Tampa and was visiting Orlando because of his job. Cedric spoke to me about his time in Upward Bound Program. He shared with me that Udeth was a significant influence in his life and “is where he is today because of Udeth and his support.” His face was filled with joy and gratitude. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to meet many Upward Bound alumni who share the same words of love and affirmation for “Mr. Lugo.” Udeth has touched the lives of thousands of children through Upward Bound who have grown up and made the world a better place. His commitment and care of young people on their journey through life has been such an inspiration!

Last week during our shelter in place incident, Gaby had already clocked out for the day and was headed to class. When the alert was sent out, Gaby grabbed nearby students and told them to follow her, and led them back towards the CCLP so that she and the students were safe. I believe she went above and beyond to help those around her and to ensure the safety of our students when she had no prior connection to these students. She exemplifies service excellence!

To: Sharon Williams
Sharon kindly and gently sat down with me to show me how to use one of the campus programs/online systems that I was struggling with. She has more important things to do with her time, but she came up to my office, sat beside me, and walked me through it. She even made a phone call to find out what to do in a situation we were uncertain about. She was so understanding and patient with my confusion. The best part is that she took the time to teach me, rather than just fixing it herself. Thank you, Sharon!

I want to thank Matthew for being collaborative and competent during IPA training! After he attended a training session through the CLCE office, he took the skills that he gained from that training and led a successful session during the International Peer Advisor training. He had great command of the of the group and did a fantastic job facilitating the various activities and debrief. He continuously tied the activity to the International Peer Advisor role, which allowed the students to gain a deeper sense of what leadership and team work is all about. Thank you Matthew for leading such an impactful session!

Richard and Larry are always very helpful, and recently, they went above and beyond to help the Sandspur. To: Richard Kopatich,Gilbert Franqui & Paolo Cabezas
Every year we have tons of work orders in to fix and paint and hang etc. throughout the Bush Science Building. Rick and Gil did an excellent job repairing and painting the walls in all the areas we were concerned with and other areas we were not aware of. Their work ethic a long with the years of experience made completing the task look easy. My faculty and the staff in the building were impressed and appreciative. Pablo on the other hand was asked to hang faculty white boards! I have to say my faculty were very happy with the finished product. I do have some very finicky people and I am so pleased to report they have had nothing but good things to say about the jobs. These employees were very professional and listened when presented with "complaints" about the walls that needed painting/repairs and when concerns were raised about the positioning of the white boards. Thank you!

To: Gill Franqui
Gill's hard work really shines through and it's obvious he has been a painter a long time, with his attention to details. He always let us know his time frame in prep and what to expect next. He worked around us with respect to our time and personal space. The office looks so much better now that there are no holes in the walls and freshly painted. In our brief conversations while the paint was drying, I found out Gill was currently attending CRUMMER GRADUATE SCHOOL and I am impressed with the way he is motivated and focused, to work full time and achieve personal goals.

Tysheika Fisher is so helpful and friendly all the time. However, I have been working with her on a project to order nametags for the Board of Trustees. There were changes required regarding the size of the logo and the spacing between name and title on the name tag. Tysheika went above and beyond and worked as a liaison between Marketing and the name tag company to ensure the name tags were perfect. She also helped make the updated layout the new template. We could not have completed this without her knowledge and help. This is just one of the many projects she has helped me complete and I am very grateful. Tysheika is an asset to Rollins.

These three gentleman showed true collaboration, responsiveness and competency! The three student employees assisted our office with delivering packages for our incoming international students. They worked in the heat of the Florida summer to transport many boxes from the warehouse to each of the students residential halls. They did this work with a smile on their face and with much enthusiasm in wanting to help the new incoming students. They were strategic about how they accomplished the work and were such a pleasure to work with. Thank you to the three of you for helping us out and most importantly for helping the incoming international students! !

Linda has completely recreated our E Check-In process for all incoming Crummer students. She has worked tirelessly with I.T. and other departments across campus to update and streamline our on-boarding procedure. Her new site has allowed staff to get access to important information on our new students more quickly and easily. And most importantly, our students are having a greatly improved experience as shown by positive comments on our surveys. Her checklist allows the students to quickly see what tasks they have completed and what remains outstanding. Linda is great to work with, responsive to all requests, and always, always works with all our team mates to give our incoming students the most positive introduction possible to their time here at Crummer.

To: Doug Shell
We have appreciated that Doug always makes himself a resource in providing guidance on print jobs. Recently, he noticed that the file for a print job would produce an inferior result and gave us time to provide a replacement file which shortened his window to finish the job. Not only was the job finished in record time on a Monday morning, but he personally delivered it to our offices while also turning around an additional poster job. His efforts made us look good in front of our custom client. This is only one time, but it is certainly representative of our many interactions with Doug. Over the years, he has proven to be a dependable, reliable and treasured colleague.

Teddy is what we used to call "Johnny on the spot"! I send a request for a new key; problem lock; dead rcard reader and two minutes after the service request is issued, the door is fixed...the key is made...all is done! I know it is longer than two minutes, but I do have to say Teddy is quick! We are also very appreciative of the hard work he did this summer adding locks to all of our classroom doors. Safety is his business and he is good at it! I hope you know the gem you have! Thank you!

Guil is a valuable asset to the Rollins Family. He takes his job (and craft) seriously. We needed two metal shelves cut down to fit into a smaller space and Guil did a beautiful job! The shelves were placed perfectly. Those are not the only shelves Guil has installed. He hung shelves in an empty closet, hence making the space usable for storage. The faculty in the division were also very happy with the poster strips he hung. Our faculty can be very particular on how things are done. I have heard nothing but good reports about Guil and his handiwork! Please let him know how much his work is appreciated

Teddy is extremely responsive to our multiple and frequent requests for new keys, rekeyed doors, malfunctioning locks, etc. in the Bush Science Center. He normally handles our requests immediately, but if he happens to be off for the day, he still replies by email or phone to let us know why a job won't be done until the next day. He knows his stuff too. He always seems to know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it. I know Teddy has received many "wows" over the years, but that's because his service is always friendly, rapid, top-quality, and respectful.

Gil is always very helpful and knowledgeable about how to get a job done right. I ordered some shelves to be mounted near our copy machines and did not get the right size. It was going to cost a good bit to return the shelves. Lucky for me, Gil was able to cut them down, add a very nice-looking top to the open-grated shelves, and mount them so that they are sturdy and safe. Not only that, he did it all in one morning. I cannot say enough about how helpful and pleasant to work with Gil is every time we need a job done. Kudos to our very excellent co-worker!

As we were transitioning into revised rules for NCAA and compliance, it became clear that several hundred financial aid funds had to be re-entered and coded differently in the Compliance Software System. As a member of the Financial Aid Team, I was experiencing a high volume of activity as we were drawing closer to the start of the fall term. I didn't see how I could accomplish this. To my delight, Judy and Sarah volunteered to get the funds entered. Some of the funds had to be re-coded after I checked them and Sarah responded within hours of me finding the discrepancies. Erik has gone above and beyond in welcoming me to campus and helping me get acclimated. He has answered so many of my questions, and when he doesn't know an answer, he actively connects me with the person who does. Whenever we're in conversation (with just us or with others), he's careful to pause and give relevant background information, so I can follow the topic and fully participate in conversations. While these may seem like small acts, they go a long way *in the opposite direction* of claiming territories and closing doors. Our Post Office operation is going through a significant change in operation by implementing new tracking and notification software to better serve our students. I never anticipated how much I would require the assistance of Mark to aid in the process of creating files that could be uploaded so the system had an accurate directory to pull from on a daily / weekly basis. Mark has been a huge factor, whether he recognizes that or not, in making sure that this transition is a successful one. The time he has spent working with NeoPost (our vendor) to make sure that the files are correct and that the uploads are successful far exceed my expectations. For a project that wasn't on his radar for this summer, he stepped in without hesitation, and has truly put forth a high level of service excellence in my opinion. His ability to collaborate with all parties involved, will make our new Post Office experience a great one for the students when complete.

When I arrived to work on Monday morning, the office was even colder than before. After calling facilities, Jason came over and took the time to isolate the problem, figure out a solution and work to resolve it so that we didn't have 55 degree air pumping into out offices nonstop. Robert is a true educator in every sense of the word. He provides unique learning tools to challenge his students and inspire them to go above and beyond the normal call of duty. Robert's leadership and commitment to student education has exceeded my expectations time and time again, all which are clearly evident through his commitment to service, diversity, and social change. In my opinion, Robert’s greatest gifts are his ability to connect with others and to think outside the box. He truly epitomizes Service Excellence on our campus.

Last week Maddie traveled across the country to explore issues of Sustainability with a group of Rollins students for an Alternative Spring Break. When one steps into an immersive experience, you never fully know what challenges will be thrown your way. The days are long and emotions can often run high and in many cases the facilitators are the ones that provide ongoing support to process big questions that far exceed the day to day life of our regular job roles. It's quite evident that she helped to provide an experience for our students that lives out the mission of the college and aligns directly with the Service Excellence values. Her leadership and commitment to student education exceeded my expectations time and time again. She continuously challenged and supported her students and team members to promote positive social change. It is quite evident that Maddie made every effort to deeply connect with each of the students and the issues they were exploring. She truly went above and beyond as it relates to the service excellence values!

Last week Princessa served as the staff advisor for an Alternative Spring Break experience to New Orleans. These experiences far exceed any normal work day, they are long and focused on exploring some of the greatest social issues of our time. Princessa stepped into this explorer to co-lead the experience with two incredible students, and worked alongside incredible members of the community. The days were long, the work was hard, but I have heard over and over again how wonderful and positive her energy was to have on this experience. It's quite evident that she helped to provide an experience for our students that lives out the mission of the college and aligns directly with the Service Excellence values. I am honored to have Juan as a colleague. I had the privilege of working with him when he was a graduate student, and I am beyond thankful that he re-joined our community this year. Juan continually lives out the mission of our institution and the values embodied with the service excellence standards. Last week, Juan served as a co-facilitator for an Alternative Spring Break to the Bahamas working with children with intellectual disabilities. Juan's energy is constantly positive, and he leads with a heart committed to community. Juan always goes above and beyond to support the Rollins community and the community-at-large. This past week he did that with a great co-facilitator team to support 14 students. He challenged himself to think critically about many of the pressing issues facing our world. These are not easy experiences, we are challenged to think differently, and have to support campus community members that at times can be exhausting and emotional. I am beyond grateful that Juan was there to serve as both a teacher and a learner. In all the interactions I have worked with Juan, he truly epitomizes the Service Excellence values!

As a follow up to the incident that occurred on Monday, March 5, where a fleeing suspect came on our campus and left a stolen vehicle behind the Chapel. Bev helped the campus community by following the motto - see something, say something. When she saw how the vehicle was driving, the demeanor of the driver, and how the vehicle was left, she knew something wasn't right. Her willingness, as an active bystander, to call WPPD and Campus Safety allowed for the safe apprehension of the suspect within 8 minutes of him coming on our campus. We wanted to thank Bev and share how much her actions made a difference in how quickly the situation was resolved. Thank you.

Although this Service Excellent note is much belated, I want to recognize the efforts of Rick and his team of painters. My family and I moved into the Ward Faculty Apartment last May, and within the space of five days, Rick and his team professionally painted the entire apartment, so that my family could move into a refreshed space. Rick met with us to select a paint color and, I am sure, reshuffled his very busy end-of-semester schedule to prioritize this job. We are grateful that he and his team could accommodate our request, and did so with good cheer. We admire your handiwork everyday!

I'm writing today to acknowledge Eric's efforts to hang and repair a set of patio lights at the Ward Faculty Apartment. About two weeks ago, Eric and Luis first came to the apartment to hang our patio lights. They helped us plan the best layout and then speedily and professionally strung them to illuminate our patio. Last Thursday, we found one of the strings had been shorn through. David asked Eric to stop by the Ward Faculty Apartment to repair this string of patio lights, and Eric came by that same day and expertly repaired the lights. We assumed we would have to replace the entire string, so we were delighted to find them rehung and functioning as if nothing has happened. Thank you, Eric, David, and Luis! Thank YOU, Travis!

I was invited to participate in a SKYPE for Business meeting (at the last minute) because I was home in Buffalo for the death of my uncle when the original meeting occurred on campus. Travis knew how important this meeting was and he worked through a series of issues and challenges to get me connected. As we worked through the technical challenges Travis was thoughtful, caring and focused. He even let me sit at his desk! After working on the issue for 30 min my counterpart in DC was unable to get on the call. I'm sure this was frustrating for Travis because but he never showed a hint of it. He was graceful and found humor in the situation. I know that Travis is a busy professional. I find his "can do" attitude and positivity incredible. I'm thankful for his leadership and love working with him! Thank YOU, Travis!

Through some unfortunate circumstances, there was no van scheduled to drive the dinner guests to and from the Chapel after the dinner. On the afternoon of the event, Jessica Deese stepped up to the plate and drove the Athletics van with the administrators and trustees. She was given very little notice, but volunteered her time. Gloria is amazing. She is one of those people who lights up with a warm smile when she greets you even in the middle of her work. Gloria is such a hard worker. She is part of the two person custodial crew in the Olin Library. She has been a part of the Olin team for 9 years. When Gloria is in the building you know it's going to look great. She cleans and maintains the 2nd and 4th floors of the library. On the 2nd floor, Gloria is responsible for cleaning the four computer labs, three other classrooms, the tutoring and writing center office and common area, the circulation desk, six offices, four bathrooms, and cafe area. In the computer labs, she even sprays every keyboard with compressed air to clean the keys. This is a lot of work in addition to that she also cleans the fourth floor which consists of multiple tables and study carrels, the tower room, and the pillow room which are highly used areas. Gloria prides herself on having a clean space and she works hard to do so without ever complaining. Gloria embodies Service Excellence and she does it without anyone noticing because she is sweet and quiet. Rollins is lucky to have Gloria. Vefi is one of the two person custodial team that cleans the Olin Library. She has been a part of the Olin team for 14 years. She works hard to keep the library looking good and staying clean. She cleans every study room on the 1st floor along with every table and counter top on the first floor. She cleans C&S and Archives as well. In addition she cleans the 3rd floor which has two offices, several study rooms, two classrooms, multiple tables, and study carrels. And when the library is open 24 hours there is a lot to clean including leftover food around the library. Vefi does this and so much more and she does it with a smile and friendly personality. She scrubs the metal wall covering under the water fountain, the metal of the elevator including the outside floorboard, all the windows and baseboards and floorboards. She even scrubs the loading area doors and casing. She is truly a member of the Olin family and a true representation of Service Excellence. She cares about the work she does. IT was tasked with upgrading the technology in all classrooms and study rooms in the Crummer building. It took a number of months to complete these upgrades. Each location necessitated collaborating with the Rollins electricians. We worked specifically with Eric and Luis. I am thankful and proud to call both of them colleagues at Rollins. When we scheduled and planned electrical related work, Eric and Luis were always ready to go on time. And when work commenced, they were efficient in getting it done. Multiple times however, Eric and Luis were called upon at the last minute to assist with unforeseen challenges we faced in upgrading the classrooms. They graciously jumped at the task at hand and responded quickly. I have a lot of confidence in Eric and Luis and appreciate the competence and professionalism they bring to their work. IT was the face for these particular upgrades in Crummer but the work of Eric and Luis in the background helped us be successful. One of the reasons I enjoy working at Rollins is because I get to work with Eric and Luis.

His help made me feel welcome to the Rollins community, as well as the small leftover decorations he let me have for my desk area. Sandra quickly notified Campus Safety and senior leadership at Crummer, allowing for a very fast response. Ultimately, Campus Safety confronted the person, who had no business on campus and was in the process of stealing items from the student lounge. We contacted WPPD and we learned that the person was on probation and had two active warrants. He was trespassed and arrested. Joe and the whole technical support team are always solution oriented and ready to help. Joe is able to make any issue, large or small, seem like it's his only priority. I rarely hear "that can't be done" instead, I am often offered multiple solutions to help solve the issue. The technical support team is able to make what might be a very stressful moment feel like ... no big deal!

A big thank you to David as he assisted our office immensely with our recent move. David was eager to help with setting up and moving pieces of furniture to help everyone settle into their new spaces. David made sure to tag all excess furniture for removal and communicate with facilities as to our needs. David also made several trips to our previous location to retrieve items needed in our department. I appreciate David's collaborative effort with our team to make HR's move to Troutman a success!

The HR team was part of the recent "summer shuffle" to relocate offices. Jordan was assigned to assist us with our I.T. needs. He has always been accommodating to all of our requests and needs, but as we had not moved offices recently we had many questions and concerns. Jordan took the time to come meet personally, answer every question and assure us that everyone would be able to log on by Monday after the move was completed. He then went further to offer his assistance in breaking down and packing our computers, monitors, phones, etc. the day of the move. All of our equipment made it to our offices and we were all able to log on this past Monday, due in large part to Jordan coming in on Saturday to start the process. He then returned on Monday after everyone had logged on to complete connecting us to our new printer. Through it all he was accessible and accommodating to everything we requested or needed. A big THANK YOU to Jordan from our entire team!

To: Larry Barrett
I want it to be known that Larry, without a partner to help carry the workload for the last few months, has worked hard at continuously providing excellent service for the IT Department. The Central Receiving Warehouse is an essential component to the operations of this college, without the staff of this service, the college would have a very difficult time in providing the amazing experience it is known to provide. Larry carried the weight of two people and for that I'm grateful. I'm grateful for the great working relationship I have with him. Now with Richard Perez paired up with Larry, I am excited to know that the warehouse will be operating at its full, efficient capacity. Thank you Larry!

CJ was incredibly helpful as our office worked to overhaul our entire website. He put forth hours of time working with me to design a site that better serves our international community, and moreove, he did so with a positive attitude. My requests for updates were quickly answered, often times within the hour. CJ clearly exemplifies the Rollins standards, and the College is lucky to have him as a resource on campus.

Richard recently transferred from the Print Shop and is now working in the warehouse. On his first day of delivering our packages, he was prompt, friendly, and delivered our packages very efficiently. Richard had all the packages scanned prior to his meeting with us and all we had to do was sign and carry on with our work. Outstanding service!

Maralyn routinely provides outstanding service to the Rollins community but yesterday evening she truly went above and beyond her role. It began to pour outside right as Crummer classes were ending at 9:30pm. Maralyn was still in the building and getting ready to go home. Instead of leaving after I’m sure was a long day at Rollins, she took the time to round up umbrellas and trash bags and personally shuttle a group of students to her car which was parked nearby. She then drove each of them to the various places they were parked across campus. Thank you, Maralyn, for being responsive, respectful, collaborative, and competent. All four service standards in action!

Tom has once again gone out of his way to help me and my department out. Tom often helps us, and in many ways. If he sees we are struggling with something, he jumps in with another set of hands; If he sees we need help with the forklift or tractor, he jumps right on it and comes over to assist. As you may have noticed, I said he sees a situation and responds, he does not wait to be asked for help, he responds to a need when he identifies it. The most recent example was yesterday. He saw us unloading a crate, so he grabbed the forklift and helped us transport it to where it need to go. When I came back to clean up the trash from uncrating the load, Tom had already taken care of it! Thanks Tom!!

Several hotels the College reserves for candidates coming to campus for interviews, were charging sales and tourist tax on their final invoices to the College. This caused follow up with the hotels, providing the College Tax Exempt Certificate and then continuing to monitor the situation until a credit was issued. Upon request, Tysheika contacted each hotel (17 of them!) and provided them all with the College Tax Exempt Certificate to keep on file. This will be such a benefit to the departments making the initial reservation as now no matter who within the department makes the reservation, the Certificate will already be on file which ultimately saves the College money on sales and tourists taxes inadvertently charged! Thanks again Tysheika!

Because lab faculty are anxious to make sure their students can get into the labs, I have to check and double check with Fernando on when this access will be provided. He is always respectful and polite, responsive in providing the status updates when I need them, collaborative in working with me and Susan Curran to figure out how best to get this task done quickly, and competent in the completion of this gargantuan project. Many times she has responded when she was off work, home sick or otherwise occupied, even when I assured her there was no rush. She is incredibly competent, and is a font of patience and information related to data, procedures, and the history of all things Rollins, and treats every email as a chance to teach or learn (the highlight of my week was when I she took an idea from me!). This is all while balancing the integrity of data with the bigger picture of solving procedural problems, while keeping in mind the needs of both the end user and the institution. It turns out, the check was on their premises, but had been delivered to the wrong box number. A big thank you Sherine for solving the mystery! Sherine Rocks!

Lauren's above and beyond service was exemplified when she provided a digital version of an insurance card while I was filling a prescription. Guidance on reimbursement would have been a reasonable expectation. Delivering a functional card in 5 minutes, so I didn't have to pay out of pocket was truly amazing. Following up with a warm, friendly message was the icing on the cake for exceptional service excellence. Kudos and gratitude to Lauren!

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Carmen in the Annie Russell Theatre as both a student at Rollins, and now in my staff capacity. She is an invaluable member of our front-of-house team, and is beloved by students, faculty, staff, and patrons. This weekend, we had three virtually sold-out shows here at the Annie Russell. Carmen put in extra hours to ensure the bathrooms were stocked and the theatre was tidy. She communicates so well with our student employees, and has worked with them to create a lost and found system. Our day-to-day operations would suffer greatly without Carmen on the team. I am very grateful for her.

To: Jen Atwell
I want to give a WOW service recognition to Jen Atwell who exemplified the service standards. It started when I requested for her to print our business card size advertisement of our new careers website. She expressed her concerns that it looked too similar to the Rollins business card so she collaborated with Marketing to confirm if she should still print it. Since Marketing saw it did look very similar to the existing business card layout, Jen took it upon herself to revise the layout to ensure it does not and what she returned to us was amazing, at no charge! It doesn't stop there. I sent her the job fair flyer to print and she also took it upon herself to match the layout of the business card advertisement. The flyer also looked very well and marketable. With these new flyers and business cards, we will be able to advertise about our Rollins work culture and the new careers website confidently. Thank you Jen for your service excellence! You w ent above and beyond, and truly WOWed us!

We had an issue with our daughter Grace Marshall receiving mail. I reached out and left a voice mail and received a return call within 2 hours. The following day, I received yet another call stating that they had identified the issue and would continue to monitor her mail box. I again received another follow up call from Kim that they had located a piece of mail that Grace had not received.
The service and diligence was amazing. Kim went above and beyond to make sure that this issue was taken care of as well as letting us know that she would personally monitor Grace's mailbox over the course of a few weeks to make sure this did not happen again. Truly amazing service and above and beyond. YET ANOTHER REASON WE LOVE BEING A PART OF THIS ROLLINS COMMUNITY AND PROUD ALUM AND PARENTS!!!

I understand Luis will be coming in to work this Saturday to deal with a carpet stain here in Olin. I am so grateful to have the privilege of working with Leon everyday. It is particularly awesome to behold his management skills in the face of a crisis. With Hurricane Matthew rapidly approaching last week, he worked very hard very quickly to ensure that our students would be safe, informed, comfortable and provided for. Leon managed to turn a scary situation for our students into a super fun sleepover! He is so magnetic, fun and energetic, it's impossible to be around him without cracking a smile which always makes hard times easier. Instead of going home to be with his loved ones, he was here keeping his Rollins family safe. I know he works hard to ensure the safety and comfort of our campus community each day, but sometimes I think he deserves to hear how much he is appreciated.

Lori graciously agreed to lead the workshop and connected with the kids in a big way. I did not realize until lately that she has continued to work with the Elevate kids on her own over the past year... despite a challenging work load and multiple conflicting demands. The Holt School sponsors one scholarship per year for a student selected from this program. Most are first generation college bound students who have little to no support from family and parents. We are grateful for the extra steps Lori has taken to build relationships with these kids, introduce them to Rollins, and teach them skills that can provide a leg up in a very competitive academic arena. It shows she cares and it sends the right message to our users -- we care. Also the fact that, although she has a desk in the Collections & Systems Department at the back of the library, she chose to enter through the front door, just as our users do, means that she experiences the library as our users experience it. I think Pat & Julie in the Bursar Office need an exceptional shout out for what they do. I see them on a weekly basis and they are always abnormally cheerful even after dealing with some of the toughest people who come to the campus on a daily basis. When dealing with money, you have to be exceptionally detail oriented and emotions are high on the other end because you are dealing with people who want answers on the spot and many that are dealing with complex financial aid, loan, or other complicated issues. This week I had an emotionally charged student who was panicking because her bank did not process a check correctly and she needed it or would get evicted. Despite the over exasperation of the student who did not treat Pat & Julie properly, they bent over backwards to calm this student down and find alternative ways to help her. They were amazing. They are two of the most unsung heroes of this campus. They have been able to answer every question I have ever thrown at them. They always get back to me immediately. They seem to have a name for every face t hat comes to their office. They are so wonderful. They always have a smile to share (and a lollipop!). What an absolute asset to the Rollins family. On June 1st our HR department went live with our new Applicant Tracking System called, PageUp! A big part of that successful launch was thanks to our project leader, David. This project involved a lot of collaboration between our office (HR office), the student employment team, Marketing and Communications, IT, and the PageUp team. Throughout the entire project he made sure to be respectful of everybody's time and prior commitments, while continuously looping in the entire project team on the different steps that were being taken and the progress that was being made. He was open-minded to our ideas and often helped guide us to solutions that benefited both HR and the student employment team. I'd like to submit this WOW in gratitude to Joe and Shaffaq, who spent the last day and a half upgrading the Reference Computer Lab in the library. Joe replaced our old workstations with computers that were not only faster, but that allowed us to finally get rid of the wobbly and unattractive mounts that were previously under the desks. This has been quite the year for Olin Library. We have seen an overwhelming number of students, staff and faculty using the building every day, not just for studying but for events and meetings. During our 2 weeks where we were open for 24 hours during finals, this place was PACKED ALL DAY AND NIGHT! And we could not have gotten through this year without our incredible team of housekeepers, Vefi, Luis and Gloria. They work incredibly hard every day to keep this building clean and functioning, and I can say that is not an easy job at all! From scrubbing up chicken wings left on the floor of group study rooms, to mopping up overflowing toilets, to wiping footprints off walls, cleaning stains out of the carpets, to dusting every nook and cranny of this building, and then just cleaning up after students every day and helping prepare and clean up after big events, I have never seen anyone work harder or care more about a place than these three people. They are a part of our family here. They take care of the building, they take care of us, and we could not continue servicing our campus community without them. Luis, Gloria and Vefi go over and beyond every day. The Olin Library is constantly busy, every space is being used all of the time, and they work so hard every day to make sure it this space is clean, comfortable and functioning. Ann spends her entire day at the tent, talking with kids, helping them to tie-dye shirts and providing a fabulous role model for the children who attend AND for our own Eco-Rollins students who help out. This past Friday I was delivering desk blotter to the Presidents Office. Upon installing the blotter I identified that it would not fit correctly on the President's desk, as it was covering up the grommet holes where all of Grant's wires ran through and created an uneven and non-functional surface. It just so happened that Will was working with Jillian on something, so I kindly interrupted him to ask if he could assist in any way, as the only solution to fix the problem was to disconnect all the computer wires, get longer ones and rewire his workstation. Without hesitation, Will looked at the issue and with complete confidence said, "no problem, I get this done within the hour." Will took the initiate and solved the problem, and I am very grateful for this. It was all about being in the right place, at the right time, and having the right person there to assist. While this may seem like no big deal to Will, I can't thank him enough for going out of his way to help out a fellow colleague.

With graduation around the corner and the presidential inauguration that just passed, I can only imagine how busy the Marketing and Communications team must be. That being said, I emailed Luke with an urgent need this week to assist me with some web content and layout. Within the matter of an hour, Luke had already made all the changes and edits I had requested and followed-up with me to ask if I needed any additional assistance and if I liked the changes he made. Luke, I truly appreciate your quick response and assistance in a time of need.

Katie was a life saver in a last minute need that I had this week. Not only did Katie drop what she was doing to help me right away, but she did it with a smile that was felt through the phone. While Qualtrics wasn't working in either of our favors, she took the time to find an alternate solution to get me the information I needed even though that meant spending a little extra time pulling the data. She consistently followed-up and provided that personalized and caring touch from start to finish. Thank you Katie for your fast and kind assistance in a time of need.

While I am a little delayed on this WOW recognition, I really wanted to take the time to recognize Lauren and John Grau for their efforts to bring a running group together every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon after work to train for the Corporate 5k that just took place in early April. Lauren and John demonstrated true teamwork putting together an interval (walk/run) training program and offering it to our entire campus to bring the Rollins community together. This was a great way to not only promote wellness, but also give an opportunity for our community to come together from different departments who don't always interact on a day-to-day basis. I joined the group myself and even though I wasn't able to make every run, I truly enjoyed the ones I did attend and the staff and faculty members I was able to meet and interact with along the way. I witnessed Lauren's personalized attention to all those in the running group and motiv ating everybody to not give up. Lauren shared her passion and love for running with others on campus and even inspired some to run their very first 5k! Thank you Lauren for providing such personalized and caring attention to all of our staff and faculty members across campus.

I was honored to lead the committee that put together the Inauguration Day of Service event. Over the last few months planning was in motion to create a day of community to emphasize President Cornwell's (and the College's) commitment to service. There were so many moving parts that allowed for an amazing day (including wonderful volunteers who powered through the rain) to come together to embody the Rollins Mission, and our partnership with the City of Winter Park. I could not have been luckier to sit on a committee with such incredibly dedicated people. I am beyond thankful to all of them( Dawn Nagy; Peg Cornwell; Sofia Macias; Courtney Durbin; Gabriel Barreneche; Ben Longstreth; Ann Francis; Carroll Goggin; Michele Meyer; Lorrie Kyle; Heather Schleiffer; Hal George; Elise Schramm; Kevin Zepf; Luke Woodling), but those listed above went above and beyond in all aspects: late night e-mails, development of marketing materials, cons istent communication around the clock, and huge levels of support. They each epitomize the definition of Service Excellence, and I am beyond grateful for their dedication to this work.

Meg and Denise were our two co-captains for the Corporate 5k this year for the R-wellness team! We had over 71 participants run/walk the Corporate 5k this year for the R-Wellness team. Meg and Denise also did a wonderful job collaborating with the Crummer team to bring both teams together to represent Rollins College. In total, I believe we were about 100 participants. They invested several weeks of time and effort figuring out all the logistics for the day of the race to ensure everybody knew where they were going, in addition to providing beverages and snacks for everyone. Thank you for bringing the Rollins community together for such a fun and healthy evening!

We are currently in the middle of a huge undertaking in the Mills Building. The roof and all windows are being replace. With construction comes a lot of interesting workers, noise, and on occasion, re and or dislocation.... Kirk has been there every step of the way, specifically when it comes to the behavior of the outside workers. He very respectfully considered that we would be out of our normal routine and showed up several times a day to make sure things were running smoothly. When I had a problem, he came right over and offered solutions. Not only did he have to deal with "us", he had to deal with the outside contractors and workers, but the most impressive thing about this was the level of respect I observed, not just with us but with everyone involved.

From the first day I met Mary to the present, I am continuously awed by her service excellence. She is eager to help, has great ideas and she often works alongside her team to ensure that the vision becomes a reality. I have had the pleasure of serving on committees with her and she brings great ideas infused with a 'can do' and 'let's do it together' attitude. Her smile is ever present. From the moment you meet Mary, you know of her love for Rollins, the people who work here, the students and what an incredible job she has done beautifying this campus! One of my first days back from med leave I was greeted to a visual masterpiece of a campus, the lawns look amazing, the flower buckets/planters smartly placed and the love and care so evident. I can only imagine the impression that leaves on first time visitors. Mary exemplifies the best of service excellence and Rollins. So very grateful to have her here at Rollins and look forward to working with her in the future!

Jon is always so helpful and smiling! Yesterday, I needed a specific piece to set up a laptop for a meeting and found our department did not have it available at the time so I ran to IT when they informed me it was the circulation desk that handled those requests. Instead of just telling me, he walked me there to ask them and although they did not have what I needed at that time, Jon still was able to provide assistance as a last minute request. He even sent one of the help desk students, Esther (very nice by the way), to ensure the laptop and everything for the meeting was set up properly. The day before that, he gladly assisted with my HR inbox when it was being blown up by spam email. Jon, thank you for your customer service, being responsive, competent and collaborative by going above your call of duty. You set a good example at the help desk. Keep smiling!

Since I didn't know where to start with getting repairs made to the Alfond Pool Office, new furniture for the office and making sure that a sewage back-up didn't occur in the future, I went to Lori's office about the new furniture. She worked with Amber-Leigh VanKuren and me to start the process of notifying Maria Martinez about the loss of furniture and if insurance would cover the loss. Then she called in John Overberger to brain storm with us about what would be the best thing to replace the ruined furniture. As we were discussing the process, she even called David Markland to find out what needed to be done so this wouldn't happen in the future as we didn't want to have to replace the furniture a 2nd or 3rd time. Since John had some experience with a similar type of incident, he brought up that the baseboards and dry wall should also be inspected.

During our discussion, John remembered that there were some items in storage that could be used to set up cubicles and the cost would be minimal as we would only have to purchase those items that were needed, not the entire system. This would also help to keep things off the floor in the event of a future mishap.

Both Lori and John were very responsive to Amber-Leigh's and my needs. Respectful of what we were trying to accomplish as quickly and cost effectively as possible. It was a very collaborative meeting and I was impressed with their professionalism and knowledge of what needed to be done in order to get a solution in place as quickly as possible.

To: Leslie Fair
This September will mark the 10-year Anniversary of one of the best things that ever happened to Rollins College - the hiring of Leslie Fair to work in the Division of Institutional Advancement. I remember the first time I met Leslie in her Interview - her smile lit up the room and everyone in it knew we were in the presence of someone special. Over the years Leslie's sunny disposition, fun personality, and hard work ethic to learn and grow both professionally and personally has positively impacted so many. For all these years, Leslie has provided all of us in the Division and in the larger Rollins Family an anchor who fills so many roles to keep all of us focused on providing service excellence to each other and to the donors whose gifts she is tasked with managing the processing of every day. Just so you can have an understanding of how many gifts that is, last year Leslie and her team processed 3,802 gifts! Best of all, her streng ths as an encourager, harmonizer, compromiser, gatekeeper and standard setter are all rooted in a deep love and pride in everything Rollins.

This nomination for Leslie today is written by me but represents the gratitude of the entire Annual Fund Team for her hard work again this year in consistently going “above and beyond” to get the job done even if it means working late nights or coming in over the holidays. Recent examples of larger than normal gift processing projects fall include the annual scholarship fundraisers for the Crummer and Holt Schools, the Founder's Day Challenge and the end of the calendar year gifts. In addition, she has trained two new (excellent!) team members (Lesa Duran-Daher and Marie Spinale) to manage various aspects of the gift processing process and remains committed to her multi-year quest to earn her Bachelor's Degree from the Holt School by taking night classes. Last but not least she was a proud participant in last fall’s Rollins HR Leadership Academy, volunteered as a guest DJ for WPRK and in her community and is an amazing mother to Corbin and wife to Mark. Thank you Leslie for all you do as a valued member of the IA Team and Rollins Family.
