Beyond the Medici:

The Haukohl Family Collection

The exhibition shows a selection of works from the Haukohl Family Collection, the largest private collection of Florentine Baroque art from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The collection has been assembled over more than 35 years by Houston-based art collector and cofounder of the Medici Archives, Sir Mark Haukohl, and is being shown in Florida for the first time, after having completed an extensive European tour.  Including paintings and sculptures depicting allegories, religious narratives, genre scenes and portraits, the exhibition sheds light on the intellectual history of Florence under the reign of the Medici Grand Dukes, while at the same time illustrating the deep interest of the Florentine Baroque for science and for painting based on “disegno” (drawing or preliminary study). Overall, it demonstrates that the Florentine artists of the 17th and early 18th centuries influenced European art history to a far greater extent than art historical research and the general public have previously perceived.

The presentation at the Rollins Museum of Art is made possible through the Ira Koger Exhibition Fund. Exhibitions at RMA are funded, in part, by Orange County Government through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program, and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. The Rollins Museum of Art is generously funded, in part, by Rollins College, Winter Park, FL.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog, published by The National Museum of History and Art of Luxembourg (Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart).
