After Rollins hosted the Earth Charter International Conference in April 2024, the partnership resulted in scholarships for students to participate in the Earth Charter Sustainability and Ethical Leadership course, allowing them to connect to a wider community of sustainability scholars and enriching the global learning opportunities available on campus.

As an affiliate, Rollins will serve as an Earth Charter reference point for the United States, helping spread the organization’s mission in tandem with the College’s to foster responsible leaders and global citizens.

“I’m incredibly excited about the potential of this new partnership and the positive change it will bring,” shares Mirian Vilela, executive director of Earth Charter International. “This collaboration creates a bridge between Florida and Costa Rica, between Rollins College and Earth Charter International—one that will allow us to share Rollins’ experience and expertise in new contexts while providing opportunities for Rollins students and faculty to engage not only with the Earth Charter but also with our global movement of young leaders, educators, researchers, schools, and universities. The global challenges we face are too complex for any one nation or institution to tackle alone. By working together, we can amplify our voices, capacity, and impact in our collective task of creating a more sustainable future for all.”

The Earth Charter is an international declaration with 16 principles outlining an ethical foundation for actions to build a more just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. The Earth Charter powers a global movement of individuals and organizations from 90 countries that have embraced the declaration’s vision and use it in various ways to guide the transition toward global interdependence and shared responsibility.
