Study of Caribbean marine life at the marine sciences laboratory of the Gerace Research Center in San Salvador, Bahamas.  Investigates the ecology, diversity, biogeography, and oceanography of coastal marine ecosystems with particular emphasis on the study of coral reefs, rocky/sandy intertidal, mangroves, and estuarine areas.  The course is physically demanding.  Students must be able to swim and be comfortable snorkeling in nearshore and offshore marine waters.

Lack of access to potable water and adequate sanitation are responsible for the death of 1.8 million people a year, most of them children under the age of five. Needless to say, improving water quality and sanitation and hygiene practices is a public health imperative. This field study takes you into rural communities in which water projects are being implemented to reduce the incidence of water-related diseases. You learn, firsthand, how to test water to make sure that it is potable and how people are trying to solve the problem at the household level. • Course Requirements: The students participate in filter distribution, collect water quality data, and conduct interviews in the communities. Back on campus the data is compiled into a document and analyzed. Traditional methods of assessment will be used (research papers, presentations, etc.), on-site discussions help to contextualize the experience which is also documented in Journals. No science background is required or expected.

From April to June of 1994, in a span of 90 days, a million men, women and children were murdered in Rwanda, many by neighbors and even family members. In just 28 years, the people of Rwanda have rebuilt their nation and reconciled this tragic genocide in ways that are nothing short of miraculous.

Today Rwanda is a peaceful people and a growing economy, welcoming international support with open arms. The 2023 Rollins in Rwanda Field Study, the fourth of its kind, will offer students an opportunity to live and work side by side with children, families, teachers, and villagers in rural Rwanda for three weeks.

Why do the forests of Central America support such an extraordinary diversity of wildlife species and habitats? What kinds of projects inspire us to re-envision our relationship with the natural world? How do people and organizations move sustainability from theory to practice? This field study provides the opportunity to explore these questions in Panama, a country with some of the richest tropical rainforests and cloud forests in Central America.

This experiential learning course focuses on the cultural, economic, societal, and religious challenges and opportunities of doing business internationally through a series of lectures/presentations and immersion activities in Japan. The course includes visits to companies, educational institutions, religious sites, and cultural events in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo.

The Prague Quadrennial is the pre-eminent performance design exhibition in the world. The PQ, held every four years in the Czech Republic, was created in 1967 as an attempt to bridge the divide created by the Cold War and to bring together designers, directors, and students, as well as the general public, for seminars, performances, and workshops, which create an unprecedented opportunity for cross-cultural exchange of ideas. The PQ engages and immerses students in an interdisciplinary exploration of performance design in context of contemporary trends in the theatre, as well as other art and cultural disciplines – creating a dialogue between visual arts and theatre. The PQ is an exhibition that encompasses performances, workshops, lectures, discussions, and collaborative presentations in a variety of design disciplines and genres including costume, stage, light, sound design, and theatre architecture for dance, opera, drama, site-specific, multi-media performances and performance art. Students will stay near the historic Old Town city center, participate in or attend at least 2 events per day, and will compile a journal of reviews and critiques for daily discussion and synthesis, as well as a final reflection and summary paper.

• Course Requirements: Attendance and participation in at least two substantial PQ events or local cultural experiences each day of the conference, written or video journal review/critique of activities, daily mandatory class meeting to discuss reviews/critiques and synthesize the previous day’s events, and final reflection and compilation journal at final class meeting.

Two of the most influential theorists and practitioners of psychotherapy are Sigmund Freud and Viktor Frankl, both creating and refining their work in Vienna, Austria to develop methods to help those experiencing psychological distress. Students will travel for 8 days to Vienna to learn about the lives and culture that shaped their indelible mark on the field of psychology. Additionally, the course will explore the influence of history, religion and WWII on the experiences of each of these preeminent thinkers. In Vienna, activities will include exploring the city, studying the history of Vienna, visiting museums directly related to the work of Freud and Frankl, touring the universities in the area, studying the impact of WWII and the Jewish religion on each person as well as the broader culture, and visiting the Mauthausen concentration camp. We will then mimic Freud’s escape from Nazi occupied Austria during WWII, traveling from Vienna to London. In London, we will spend a few days exploring the historical context that influenced Freud’s work and visiting the Freud museum in London. There will be many opportunities for reflection and discussion both during the field study trip and during the required 1 credit course occurring during the Spring 2023 semester.

What do you know about the Arab world, North Africa? Is Islam your first thought? During this field study, you will debunk persistent stereotypes, explore different aspects of Tunisia and perceive a vibrant and complex reality. This country may be the smallest country in Northern Africa, but it’s full of culture and history that will enrich your study abroad experience. In Tunis, the country’s capital, less than 100 miles south of Europe and the birthplace of the Arab Spring, you will take some culture-focused language class, meet with leaders from the civil society, and examine Tunisia’s peaceful transition to democracy. Ultimately, this program will challenge you to become global citizens: mindful travelers and take every opportunity to build their intercultural knowledge and skills.

• Course Requirements: General readings pertaining to sites to be visited, creation of a “travel brochure” in response to a specific prompt, mini-presentation (history, politics, linguistics, culture) due before some sites visits as a preparation for the whole class, cultural self-reflection, interview with a civil society activist, daily linguistics challenges, and a final reflection paper.
