Southern Lit Road Trip
Regional literature is often recognized for its unique sense of place, and southern writing is no exception. In the downtown square of Oxford, the lush plantations of Louisiana, the rolling farms of Georgia, and the magnolia-lined streets of Savannah, some of our favorite works come to life. Our study of them is enhanced by our immersion in these cultural settings.
For the first eight weeks of the semester, we’ll read selected works from some of the region’s most celebrated authors, and over Spring Break, we’ll take an old-fashioned road trip through the south, touring writers’ homes and the places that inspired them. You will respond to this experience through a travel journal that will inform a travel essay and an extended critical analysis you’ll construct when we return.
