Senior Capstone Showcase

On 4/29/16, Rebecca (Bekki) Charbonneau, Alex Fang, Jasmine Kitterman, Savannah Knapp, Matt McGuffee, Morgan Saunders, John (Jack) Spallone, and McKenzi Vanderberg screen their senior documentaries on topics ranging from 21st century dating to Donald Trump.

Other 2015-2016 Highlights

Global Peace Film Festival. Rollins hosted the 14th annual Global Peace Film Festival September 21-25, 2016, the college’s eleventh year uniting with this community partner. Students in Dr. Denise Cummings’ Media, Peace, and Justice course led the campus kick-off celebration on the International Day of Peace, September 21st. Brooke Bumgarner  (Class of 2017) read a formal proclamation from Winter Park, FL, Mayor Steve Leary declaring September 21st, 2016 International Peace Day in Winter Park. Rollins and the Global Peace Film Festival held screenings and panel discussions and hosted filmmakers for the 6-day event. 

Florida Film Festival at 25. CMC celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Florida Film Festival. Dr. Denise Cummings serves as a selection committee member, co-teaches an immersion course in the festival, and moderates its Filmmaker Forum.

Divestment Efforts. The student-led Rollins Coalition for Sustainable Investment lobbies the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees to divest from fossil fuels within 5 years. Dr. Lisa Tillmann serves as liaison between the student group and the Rollins Action Network.

To Note! On 3/11/16, Dr. Lisa Tillmann delivers a keynote address, “Autoethnography and Advocacy,” at the Doing Autoethnography conference, hosted by Angelo State University. The conference’s other keynote, delivered by Carolyn Ellis, featured a film, Groaning from the Soul, directed and edited by Dr. Steve Schoen.

Keeping Guns Off Campus. Drs. Steve Schoen and Emma Oxford co-chair a subcommittee of the Rollins Action Network (RAN) devoted to opposing Campus Carry. A RAN-led petition drive collects 175 signatures from faculty, administrators, and senior staff, including President Grant Cornwell.

Student Advocates. In fall 2015, Critical Media and Cultural Studies Professor Dr. Lisa Tillmann directed the course, "Incarceration and Inequality." Throughout the term, students were exposed to a number of systemic problems pertaining to the criminal justice system. Student groups selected one area needing reform, researched the problem thoroughly, and developed advocacy presentations. Read more. 

Public Scholarship. The 2015 National Communication Association’s Opening Session, Beyond the Tower - Embracing Opportunities for Creative Education, Engagement, and Empowerment features four scholars, Dr. Lisa Tillmann among them. Dr. Tillmann titles her remarks “Education for Action, Advocacy, and Social Change.”
