Starr Receives POMS Distinguished Service Award

June 6, 2013 - Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Operations Management and Management Science Martin K. Starr, Ph.D., is the first recipient of the Sushil K. Gupta Distinguished Service Award from the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS). He was presented with the award during the POMS Annual Conference Awards Ceremony held in Denver, CO, on May 5, 2013.

Dr. Starr, who is internationally renowned for his contributions to the field of operations management, taught MBA classes at Rollins for many years and continues to teach classes at the school’s Center for Management and Executive Education. He has published more than 25 books and has been recognized for his contributions to the corporate world via his writings in practice-oriented journals, consulting assignments; teaching in executive development programs, and serving on management boards of various corporations.

The Sushil K. Gupta POMS Distinguished Service Award was established to recognize POMS leaders who have significantly enhanced the general welfare of POMS members through service contributions and who have substantially contributed to the growth of the organization. The award was named after Sushil K. Gupta, Ph.D., to honor him for his dedicated service to POMS. Dr. Starr was President of POMS in 1995 and has been a Fellow of the Production and Operations Management Society since 2004.

“Marty continues to write, mentor young professionals, consult with companies, provide service to professional societies, and travel all over the world to expand the POMS community and to raise its impact on organizations,” said Dr. Gupta during the awards presentation. “He wants to continue to pursue the themes that have fascinated him for more than five decades.”
