Edyth Bush Foundation Awards Laureen Martinez a 2010 Karen Plunkett Memorial Scholarship to Rollins College

August 25, 2010— The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation in Winter Park, Florida, has awarded the first Karen Plunkett Memorial Scholarship to Laureen Martinez, Chief Public Relations Officer at the American Red Cross. The scholarship is for the Rollins College Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center’s Certificate in Leadership Practice program that begins on September 2, 2010.

Laureen Martinez has been the Chief Public Relations Officer at the American Red Cross since 2008. Prior to joining the nonprofit sector, Laureen spent several years working as a television reporter in the Southeast United States. She is actively involved with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Don Quixote Awards steering committee and is a current member of the Florida Public Relations Association, Orlando Chapter.

The new Karen Plunkett Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a public relations or communications professional in Orange, Osceola, Seminole or Lake counties. Preference is given to an individual who is involved in the community or who has connection with a nonprofit organization. Karen Plunkett specialized in public relations and was known for her gracious style combined with a steely resolve. She was president of the Florida Public Relations Association and earned the group's Dillon Award for lifetime achievement. For 15 years, she also taught public relations courses at Rollins College and the University of Central Florida, where she earned her master's degree.

The Certificate in Leadership Practice is designed for nonprofit professionals, including emerging leaders, who are ready to take their leadership skills to the next level. Attendees develop a comprehensive understanding of their personal leadership style through self-assessment, learn about organization dynamics and the role leaders play at all levels, and how to be more effective leaders within their current or future leadership positions.
