“I really enjoy the intellectual challenge of teaching — explaining complex issues in a stimulating environment — and students questioning how the concepts taught in the classroom can help them create their own frame of reference for understanding the world. I remind them that in engaging in my class they can control their future financial destiny rather than simply fall victim to it due to ignorance — my aim is to provide my students with the tools to understand the world they are part of, so they are no longer just passive observers, but are able to develop a critical mindset and ultimately become actors, facilitators and initiators on an international stage. I try to show them that the skills sets they develop and hone in the classroom can be applied in whatever sector of society they may choose to work in; that quantitative financial skills are a prerequisite of our modern society which simply cannot be ignored. To my mind teaching is not just about one’s subject area: it is about stimulating genuine intellectual generosity, enabling students to learn about the world for themselves and reinforcing the valuable courses they have already completed in the program. It also enables more reflective thinking and to apply their critical skills. These are the business skills which are going to make the greatest difference in their readiness to tackle their future careers. It also provides an open forum both in and out of class, reinforcing the fact that learning is a journey, not a destination, inside an institution like Rollins (especially as the cross-fertilization of ideas, the conceptual linkages and the mosaic approach of a liberal arts education clearly encourage this) and a process of profound personal development which transcends the classroom.” Richard Lewin is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Rollins College.
