Meet the Writing Consultants

Cassandra (Cassie) Backovsky

Cassandra Backovsky

Hello everyone! I’m Cassie and I am a sophomore double major in Psychology and International Business with a minor in Spanish. I am originally from Orlando, Florida (although my family is from Ohio) and I love to read, write, and be outside! From formal assignments to creative writing assignments, I love working with all types through all of the steps – brainstorming, drafting, revisions, you name it! I am currently skilled in APA and MLA format however, I am learning Chicago format as we speak so I will be able to help with whatever citations you need! Aside from academics, I love to sit out on Mills Lawn or by the lake with a book and just relax and enjoy nature. As a writing consultant, I will strive to make sure that as a client, you feel confident with your work and comfortable before you leave. Please never hesitate to ask for help, it’s what I am here for! :)

Katherine Barnekow

Kate Barnekow

I'm a sophomore Philosophy major and English minor from Georgetown, Texas. I serve as President of Rollins College Democrats, Secretary of the Florida College Democrats, and work as the Statewide Coordinator for Florida for Fair Elections Legal Network. I love working with writers in every stage of the writing process, but my strengths are outlining ideas and fine-tuning drafts. I'm also vegan, a bookworm, convinced that pretzel sticks are superior to traditionally shaped pretzels, and an avid baker.

Anne Fertig

Anne Fertig

Hi there! My name is Anne Fertig. I am an English major and creative writing minor here at Rollins. I am also Editor-in-Chief of the Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal and have worked as an intern for the Source. In fact, some of the handouts you see around the hub may have been written by me! I have also participated in a research project with Dr. Cohen and will be publishing a book from this research. Language is one my true loves. I really enjoy helping people over a period of time to improve their writing. I can assist with everything from brainstorming to revising, and I will work to teach you methods that will stick with you long after the session has ended. Grammar and syntax are probably my biggest strengths, but I am also good with those tricky transitions. However, I’ll warn you, APA is not my forte.

Faithe Galloway

Faithe Galloway

Hi y'all! My name is Faithe (yes, it is spelled with an "e." That isn't a typo), and this is my first year as a Writing Consultant! I am so grateful for this opportunity to work with all of you; it has been immensely rewarding already. I genuinely enjoy the writing process, and seeing my scattered ideas manifest into a coherent argument is incredibly rewarding for me. If you aren't a fan of writing, don't worry! We will work together to make the process as painless and productive as possible.

I am also pursuing a major in English and a minor in Communication Studies, which goes to show I love all forms of communicating. However, I do more on campus than sit around and write; I am involved in Greek Life, SGA, REP, and I am a Peer Mentor. I love being involved on campus, meeting new people, and helping others-- this job is a perfect combination of all three! So now that you know a little bit about me, I look forward to meeting you and working with you!

Antonella Gazzardi

Antonella Gazzardi

Hi! I am a senior English major originally from Italy. I have lived in Florida for ten years and plan on going on to graduate school after graduation this coming May. I speak Italian and English. I love literature with a passion, especially 19th -20thcentury lit, I am fascinated by language in all its variations and applications, and, believe it or not, I actually have fun with grammar exercises and revisions. Other interests of mine are historical linguistics and Renaissance art history. I am comfortable with building theses, outlining, and proofreading, in other words with the whole process, and I can help you with your paper from brainstorming to tightening. However, I’d say my strength is helping with papers that have some kind of structure already, say middle-stage draft to late/final drafts. I know MLA well, I have some experience with Chicago, but unfortunately I have none with APA. I must say I am not your person if you need help with poetry or scientific reports unless you only need to proofread the latter. Otherwise, here I am!

Mackenzie Gill

Mackenzie Gill

I am a sophomore English Major in the Honors Program and love to break dance, sketch landscapes, and write exciting papers. I also enjoy brainstorming about paper topics and analyzing texts. I would consider myself a knowledgeable guide at any stage of the writing process and am flexible with regards to a student's needs. I strive to instill confidence in my clients by offering constructive suggestions while encouraging their individual writing styles. Please do not hesitate to schedule an appointment. I look forward to working with you!

Abbott Jones

Abbott Jones

Hello!  My name is Abbott Jones, and I am a senior, an English major and Creative Writing minor, and an editor of Brushing—the Rollins Undergraduate Journal of literary and aesthetic art—here at Rollins.  One of my major strengths as a writer includes looking at large concepts and ideas, piecing them together to make a cohesive whole.  I have also taken quite a few courses on rhetoric and syntax, so I can help out with tightening your sentences for better emphasis and rhetorical effect.  Besides just critical essays, I have a strong interest and focus on poetry—whether it be writing it or writing about it.  So come see me if you need help with anything from brainstorming, to restructuring, to editing for precision—I look forward to working with you!

Amanda (Mandy) McRae

Amanda McRae

Hi! My name is Mandy McRae and I'm a sophomore majoring in English and Art History. I love going to Walt Disney World, watching sunsets, and writing thesis statements. Yes, I said it. The thesis! So come see me if you're in the brainstorming stages and want to draft out a thesis or outline of your paper. I'm also linked with Dr. Mathews' Major English Writings I class, so if you ever want to talk medieval lit that's fine with me!

Jonathan Pamplin

Jonathan Pamplin

Hello! My name is Jonathan Pamplin. I'm an English Major, a Women's Studies Minor, a co-president of Voices For Women, a co-vice president and co-founder of Introverts United, a member of GAME, and, most importantly to you, given the website you're currently reading, a writing consultant. (I'm also a Junior, a Leo, a contortionist, a dreamer, a joker. . .) In the time I've worked at the writing center, I've developed a solid skill at helping people brainstorm topics, evidence, and new directions for their papers and a fair skill at detecting and correcting organizational problems, so I can definitely help you with global concerns. If your concerns are more granular - phrasing, spelling, and punctuation - I can probably help with those, too. But if your concerns are on a somewhat different scale - figuring out your purpose in life, finding true love, attaining harmony between the innate but contrasting desires for social inclusion and individuality - I'm afraid I can't help you. Sorry.

Rachel Reams

Rachel Reams

Hey y’all! (Yes, I did just say that). I’m a second year student in the 3/2 Business Management Program, but I’m not actually studying business: I figure I’ll get plenty of that later on at Crummer. I’m a history major, so I’m most comfortable with Chicago citations, footnotes, and endnotes. I am always going to claim Chicago is better than MLA-because citations in parenthesis are just obnoxious-but I understand both MLA and APA as well, so I can always help on those two. My specialty is probably analysis of another piece of writing or a concept. I can help find a small detail that you can find support for and expand into an entire paragraph. Other than that, I like long walks on the beach, sunsets and bonfires… HA, or not. But I do make thousands of weird faces, prefer stairs to escalators, and love the smell of old books.

Debra (Kelci) Reyes-Brannon

Kelci Reyes-Brannon

Hi everyone! I'm Kelci and I am a senior International Relations major with a minor in Latin American Caribbean Studies. I was born and raised in West Palm Beach, FL and the one thing I miss about home is the beach! I am a writing consultant and a political science tutor, but I am comfortable reviewing and assisting in papers from any course. I have the most experience in citing Chicago style, but I have previously used MLA and APA citation styles. I'm an active member of the Academic Honor Council and a Safe Zone trained Ally through Spectrum.  I love to talk, meet new people, and my favorite drink is iced tea.  Don’t be afraid to say hi to me or ask me questions about anything! I’m always glad to chat!

Tian (Stephanie) Sang

Cassandra Backovsky

Hello there :-) My name is Stephanie Sang, an English major, Secondary Education minor, and wannabe anthropologist.  I love to wonder and will be fascinated by almost anything I encounter.  Got papers about Physics? International Business? Religion? All three combined? Bring them to me! As an English major, I absolutely love the challenge of working within the confines of grammar and structure to push the limits of what language can do. More than anything, I love the way analyzing literature trains my mind to make connections between the most unlikely ideas, contemplate on life, and think as creatively as I can—especially when there are limits. Because I am minoring in Education, be warned that I will be trying to draw this type of analytical thinking out of you during your visit. When I’m not having fun in school, you can find me practicing yoga, dancing to the Biebs, and walking somewhere “natury.” I’m genuinely excited and look forward to working with you!

Owaissa Vanderberg

Owaissa Vanderberg

As a non-traditional Hamilton Holt student working toward my degree in English, my strength lies in communicating the essential points found in most academic papers that support specific writing assignments. My clients find that brainstorming topics and working on thesis and organization with me makes for a more successful final draft. I am familiar with writing in either MLA or Chicago styles throughout the Humanities fields. I hope to complete my undergraduate degree in May of 2013. I plan to enroll in graduate school and work towards my Masters in Mental Health Counseling. In my free time, I enjoy parenting three great kids, volunteering in my community, and relaxing in the outdoors.
In my experiences at the Writing Center, I am continually reminded of the importance of constructive feedback during the writing process: Every stage of writing, whether prewriting, writing or revision, can benefit from an objective academic review.

Gerry Wolfson-Grande

Gerry Wolfson-Grande

Hi, I’m Gerry Wolfson-Grande, and I am a writing consultant and history tutor. I have a BA in history/political science from Rollins, and I am finishing up my Masters in Liberal Studies degree at Rollins. When I’m not in class, working on my thesis project, or helping students here at the Writing Center, I am a freelance writer, editor, and translator (German-English). When I’m not doing ANY of those things, I read and write as much fiction as I can squeeze in, usually with my small hairy dog, Annie, settled in my lap or next to me in my chair. So far that’s led to a few published short stories, one completed mystery novel being shopped around, and another in the works.
I can help you with just about all of the stages of the writing process: brainstorming and organization; pinning down your thesis statement and how you go about arguing it in your paper, whether it’s a short argument or focus paper or a lengthy research paper; those pesky grammar and mechanics issues, including dealing with passive usage; effective methods for self-editing and proofreading; and how to select and structure your word choices and sentence structure for maximum effect, whether you are writing a creative piece or an academic paper. If citations are making you crazy, I can provide guidance not only with when and how to cite and/or quote materials, but on working with Chicago, MLA, and APA styles. I enjoy working with the variety of students who come to the Writing Center very much, and will be more than happy to work with you.
