The Cornell Campus Center, hailed as the “hub of student activities” and the “heart of campus,” officially opened its doors in February, 1999. The 36,000 square-foot center, with its commanding views of the campus and Lake Virginia, is home to a variety of dining facilities, conference rooms, and lounges. The upper level of the center houses a cafeteria that utilizes the new marché dining concept, with freshly prepared food cooked at a series of stations. Also on the upper level is a lounge with large-screen TVs and an “e-mail bar,” where students can check and send e-mail. The lower level houses Dave’s DownUnder, a coffee-style gathering spot for students, in addition to a convenience store and The Grille. The rear of the facility opens onto the Swindle Lakeside Patio and the Alfond Pool.
The Alfond Pool serves as home to the varsity men’s and women’s swim teams. The place to hang out on a warm spring day or to swim laps on a chilly winter morning, the Alfond Pool was built in 1972 and overlooks beautiful Lake Virginia. The 25-yard, eight-lane pool is heated for winter use and cooled for swimming in the summer. It is a popular spot among students for both sunbathing and swimming.
