WOW Spotlight: Travis & Alexa Ray

On December 14, the Service Excellence Team recognized Alexa and Travis Ray with a Big Wow award for their ongoing acts of generosity and service, including hosting students for holiday dinners and celebrations in their home, providing groceries to a student in need, and helping lead efforts to raise money for a colleague in need.

Above & Beyond

After moving the entire Hamilton Holt School and setting up multiple events in one week, it’s clear that the current transport team—Jerome Brown, Khris Lewis, and Ramon Robledo—is a band of on-the-ball men who tackle each job with a great attitude and cheetah-like speed.

To: Will Bailey
I have made several moves with in the Summer Shuffle time line and have finally settled in my new location. Within this three month period, William has helped multiple times and always with a cheerful attitude. He has a wonderful professional confidence and superior ability, therefore making me feel comfortable that no job is too big or small when asking for help. The IT Department at Rollins is top notch, but Will goes "above the bar" in Service Excellence!!!

On very short notice, Rob was called on to coordinate A/V for an important weekend event that required renting equipment from an outside vendor. After working Saturday for another campus event, he was back on Sunday to oversee the installation and assure the smooth delivery of video and sound--all of which he did with great professionalism and good humor, assuring that the College's guests had an excellent Rollins experience.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Jorge for cutting the slates I need to put the peg board up for the soon-to-be Rollins Bike Shop! With a full schedule and work load, he took the time to get exactly the pieces I wanted, how I wanted them. He even let me borrow some tools to get the job done. Much appreciated!

Everyday it's a pleasure to come to Rollins and see the beauty of the campus thanks to our Facilities team who work tirelessly to keep the campus looking immaculate all the while having multiple construction projects going on simultaneously. not to mention it's still hurricane season. When something breaks, they are called in to fix it and continue their regular duties. Their work makes Rollins a special place to work and study. Thank you Facilities team!

Julie went above and beyond is assisting us in getting our concession stand register up and running just in time for our soccer home openers. When she could have easily just called it a day after spending a great deal of time on the problem, Julie ran all over campus and was eventually successful in finding a solution to our issue. I feel her efforts deserve recognition.

During all of the chaos with hurricane Irma, Dave and Eric (including his whole electrical team) helped us out with a last minute request for emergency power. We knew they were very busy during the hurricane preparations, but they still made time and helped us out right when we called them. As always, they were quick to respond and incredibly helpful.

To: Mae Fitchett
I’m so thankful for Mae’s energy and enthusiasm towards our students. She presented one of the sessions during International Student Orientation, and as in years past, Mae was able to relay the important information to the students in such a captivating way. She did such an amazing job of engaging with them, getting to know them a bit, and ensuring that the information needed was given and received on the other end. Though, this may sound like a small feat, you could truly feel her warm and inviting energy that she brought into the space to a group of new students just arriving on campus. We truly are so lucky to have such a special person on our campus welcoming our students!

To: Julie Sparks
I have been involved with 19 Freshman Orientation days and every year the R-card distribution is one of the trickiest parts to get right. Typically there are technical problems and long lines, which culminate in frustration for our new Freshman and their parents. However, Julie's hard work and preparation showed us what Service Excellence looks like. She exemplified all four of the Service Standards in making this one of the smoothest Orientation days I have ever seen. She greatly reduced the stress for my team in IT and, most importantly, allowed for a smooth transition for our incoming Freshmen.

To: Ramon Robledo
Ramon did an excellent job in the Psychology Department common area with cleaning our carpets. They look just as good now than they did when we moved in over 3 years ago. He also made sure everyone was not allergic to strong smell of cleaning. He realized that he needed to have it done quickly, as students would be coming back soon. So he got it done on Friday afternoon!!! I am sure he and all of Facilities have been super busy and and short handed. We appreciate all they do to get our campus ready for this Fall Semester!! GREAT JOB!! All the time with a SMILE on their face!

Saturday morning during the loading of buses at SPARC Day, Julie noticed that a student didn't have closed toed shoes for her community service project. It was a requirement to get onto the bus. Not missing a beat, Julie literally gave the student the shoes off her feet! Julie consistently goes above and beyond for students across campus and this is just one more selfless way she continues to exude service excellence. Not to mention that Julie didn't slow down during the morning shift of loading the buses and cheering on the students while working in the parking lot in her bare feet. Responsive and Respectful are clearly evident with Julie.

I've had a pleasure to be a part of Julia' class Career & Life Planning. Great class, great instructor. Thanks to Julia's teaching style, the class was very dynamic and inspiring; she was always available for assistance, if needed. Everything that was taught in the class is invaluable, from resume writing to searching and applying for jobs, etc.; the acquired knowledge serves as a natural addition to (or an extension of) my previous (years long) experience. Julia even brought together a panel, which consisted of several professionals, to discuss and investigate various career options. This class should be built-in in all majors at Rollins/Holt, as it prepares students for a life-after-the college.
On several occasions, Julia was very helpful to me even after the course ended. Thanks, Julia!

I am certain the Summer Shuffle created numerous requests for follow-up maintenance, repairs, relocations, etc. I submitted a request in June and followed up in August to see where I might be in the que. Jorge Ramirez was assigned to take care of the installation of a keyboard desk pull out. Unfortunately, I was off-campus when he began trying to connect with me. He tried several times and we finally worked out things today. My timing was off. I called and was then out of the office - it could have been a big source of frustration but he patiently persisted to get the job done. I appreciate his diligent work ethic and helpful attitude. Thanks, Jorge.

Skip is a wonderful person to work with. He is a professional individual who is responsive and competent in his role and responsibilities, and always available to help or explain when I call. Not only did he get it installed, but he did it sooner than expected. Skip and his team are always there for me and my team when we call. His dedication and service to Rollins and his co-workers, is an example for others to follow. I very much appreciate his help and time.

To: Sandra Henry
Sandra was working in Crummer on the bottom floor when she recognized a person from outside of the campus community that we believed was involved in several thefts on campus. We had video of this person stealing from a Duke TIPS camper, taking food from an orientation session, and casing offices on the 3rd floor of Crummer. Sandra quickly notified Campus Safety and senior leadership at Crummer, allowing for a very fast response. Ultimately, Campus Safety confronted the person, who had no business on campus and was in the process of stealing items from the student lounge. We contacted WPPD and we learned that the person was on probation and had two active warrants. He was trespassed and arrested. We appreciate Sandra's attention and willingness to help ensure that we maintain a safe and secure campus community.

I encountered a few issues with classroom technology that needed to be resolved quickly before a student orientation. Nour promptly responded to emails while he was on vacation overseas so that we could quickly resolve one issue. When he returned from vacation, he collaborated with another colleague to test, troubleshoot, and resolve audio issues in a classroom which ultimately improved the audio quality for students. When my team encountered an issue with a new technology tool, we sent him an email after our meeting ended just after 5 pm to notify him of the issue. Nour drove over to campus after hours to try and assist us before we left. He is extremely responsive. He thoroughly investigates issues to get to the bottom of them and is always very positive and collaborative when doing so. Thank you for your excellent service, Nour!

To: Aaron Trombley
Aaron is ready, at a moment's notice, to help out wherever he can. This morning he helped the one Facilities staff person who came to pick up the 100+ boxes of books to be delivered to the warehouse. This is very "behind the scenes" work that is hardly noticed by those that enter through the back door of the Library. These boxes are heavy and hard to move around. He helped put them on a dolly, wheel them over to the truck and heave them onto the truck bed. He did it with his helpful spirit and a big smile, never complaining. By doing this, he exhibits care and collaboration with two departments and strength! I am so honored to work together with him to represent Olin in the best light!

The HR team was part of the recent "summer shuffle" to relocate offices. Jordan was assigned to assist us with our I.T. needs. He has always been accommodating to all of our requests and needs, but as we had not moved offices recently we had many questions and concerns. Jordan took the time to come meet personally, answer every question and assure us that everyone would be able to log on by Monday after the move was completed. He then went further to offer his assistance in breaking down and packing our computers, monitors, phones, etc. the day of the move. All of our equipment made it to our offices and we were all able to log on this past Monday, due in large part to Jordan coming in on Saturday to start the process. He then returned on Monday after everyone had logged on to complete connecting us to our new printer. Through it all he was accessible and accommodating to everything we requested or needed. A big THANK YOU to Jordan from our entire team!

To: Larry Barrett
I want it to be known that Larry, without a partner to help carry the workload for the last few months, has worked hard at continuously providing excellent service for the IT Department. The Central Receiving Warehouse is an essential component to the operations of this college, without the staff of this service, the college would have a very difficult time in providing the amazing experience it is known to provide. Larry carried the weight of two people and for that I'm grateful. I'm grateful for the great working relationship I have with him. Now with Richard Perez paired up with Larry, I am excited to know that the warehouse will be operating at its full, efficient capacity. Thank you Larry!

CJ was incredibly helpful as our office worked to overhaul our entire website. He put forth hours of time working with me to design a site that better serves our international community, and moreove, he did so with a positive attitude. Richard recently transferred from the Print Shop and is now working in the warehouse. On his first day of delivering our packages, he was prompt, friendly, and delivered our packages very efficiently. To: Maralyn Graham
Maralyn routinely provides outstanding service to the Rollins community but yesterday evening she truly went above and beyond her role. It began to pour outside right as Crummer classes were ending at 9:30pm. Maralyn was still in the building and getting ready to go home. Instead of leaving after I’m sure was a long day at Rollins, she took the time to round up umbrellas and trash bags and personally shuttle a group of students to her car which was parked nearby. She then drove each of them to the various places they were parked across campus. Thank you, Maralyn, for being responsive, respectful, collaborative, and competent. All four service standards in action!

Jackie Brito is the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Marketing at the Crummer School. Throughout the 2016-17 academic year Assistant Dean Brito demonstrated the college’s Service Excellence standards on many occasions. This ranged from skillfully diffusing student situations in caring and respectful ways, to being there for our students in highly sensitive situations. Tom has once again gone out of his way to help me and my department out. Tom often helps us, and in many ways. If he sees we are struggling with something, he jumps in with another set of hands; If he sees we need help with the forklift or tractor, he jumps right on it and comes over to assist. As you may have noticed, I said he sees a situation and responds, he does not wait to be asked for help, he responds to a need when he identifies it. The most recent example was yesterday. He saw us unloading a crate, so he grabbed the forklift and helped us transport it to where it need to go. When I came back to clean up the trash from uncrating the load, Tom had already taken care of it! Thanks Tom!!

Several hotels the College reserves for candidates coming to campus for interviews, were charging sales and tourist tax on their final invoices to the College. This caused follow up with the hotels, providing the College Tax Exempt Certificate and then continuing to monitor the situation until a credit was issued. Upon request, Tysheika contacted each hotel (17 of them!) and provided them all with the College Tax Exempt Certificate to keep on file. This will be such a benefit to the departments making the initial reservation as now no matter who within the department makes the reservation, the Certificate will already be on file which ultimately saves the College money on sales and tourists taxes inadvertently charged! Thanks again Tysheika!

She is patient, understanding, and has to sometimes deal with frustrated "clients" or those who place catering orders. She is always kind, thoughtful, and goes out of her way to make sure your specific needs are addressed. I have worked closely with her and even though sometimes I have to request things out of the normal routine, she tries to accommodate me or provide me with more affordable or more palatable options. Each semester, Fernando works with me to provide lab access to students enrolled in a lab class. It's a tedious process for him and the work all falls at the beginning of the semester when things are already extremely busy for him. Because lab faculty are anxious to make sure their students can get into the labs, I have to check and double check with Fernando on when this access will be provided. He is always respectful and polite, responsive in providing the status updates when I need them, collaborative in working with me and Susan Curran to figure out how best to get this task done quickly, and competent in the completion of this gargantuan project. She's proactive too, sending me lists of scheduled labs each term even before the enrollment info is available. And she sends me a drop-add list too. Amanda Vocks consistently goes over and beyond for everyone here in the library. As our one person "Cheer Committee" she puts together birthday parties with personalized jeopardy questions and banners made especially to celebrate that person's interests. She takes the time to decorate, provide food and overall make these celebrations so much fun which brings us all together! She is also someone who always offers her help when you may be feeling overwhelmed. As part of our display committee she has created some of the most outstanding, interactive displays, and always puts so much time and care into making sure they celebrate the diverse interests on our campus. Recently we were asked to quickly put together a display for the upcoming Winter with the Writers, and though we are all so swamped with many projects and other tasks, she took the initiative to not only put up a display, but spent time researching and finding material and c reated this spectacular display celebrating ALL the authors coming to campus. Thank you Amanda!

Darla is passionate about her work in the Archives. As a member of the Display Committee within Olin Library, Darla is often one of the first people to offer assistance to her peers. We recently were discussing the possibilities for a banner and a coworker asked for ideas on how to craft it; Darla was the first to respond creating a sample banner as a template despite having a busy day. I have often asked Darla questions about people connected to Rollins and she answers my questions and even takes the time to send a follow-up email with additional information and resources. Darla cares about Olin Library and Rollins, it shows in her work.

Jennifer puts so much energy into her work. You can tell by talking to her for a minute how much she cares about the work she is doing. Jennifer is always helpful and answers every question in a pleasant way. She is kind, responsive, dedicated, and hard working. Recently I attended Jennifer's Open Enrollment Session where she explained the new benefits and plan options for our health insurance. She answered multiple questions during the session and even stayed to answer individual questions. Jennifer made sure that everyone knew how to get a hold of her if they needed help or had questions about benefits. She presented the information in a clear way that made the whole process so much easier. Jennifer does great work here. We are lucky to have her. Thank you Jennifer for all that you do for us.

Over the last year John has gone above and beyond to help me, the HR team and many departments in our community with various needs and projects requiring IT support. Thank you for helping to create “WOW” experiences for our staff, faculty and students. I appreciate your continued efforts and commitment to the mission and the service philosophy of Rollins College.

I wanted to thank Mark Schendel for all the work he does on the printing software for the W2’s. Every year he updates this software and makes the edits to the emails that are sent out. He makes this look effortless but I know the amount of work he does to make all this happen. Always so responsive and happy to help. This year with the Electronic W2 consent we had an issue printing W2’s for former employees. I explained the issue I was experiencing late in the afternoon and he came up with the solution the very next morning. Thanks to his quick response we were able to send out our W2’s timely to employees and were able to meet the new filing deadlines employers have on reporting W2 information to the governmentally agencies this year. Thank you for everything you do.

Although we discovered the situation was not pertaining to IT set up, Katie provided assistance by reaching out to Ellucian and forwarding their suggested solution. She also assisted with an update to FoxLink language in real time, which resolved our issue. Thanks, Katie!

I email Susan on a daily basis, and I basically send her problems with records, some very complicated by years of neglect. Sometimes I actually cringe when I send the fifth problem in a single day, but she has never failed to respond in a manner that was anything other than supportive, approachable, courteous, respectful, and collaborative. Many times she has responded when she was off work, home sick or otherwise occupied, even when I assured her there was no rush. She is incredibly competent, and is a font of patience and information related to data, procedures, and the history of all things Rollins, and treats every email as a chance to teach or learn (the highlight of my week was when I she took an idea from me!). This is all while balancing the integrity of data with the bigger picture of solving procedural problems, while keeping in mind the needs of both the end user and the institution. She is a consummate professional with a wonderful sense of humor, and I am grateful for her help and guidance. Thank you Susan Curran, Queen of Banner!

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Carmen in the Annie Russell Theatre as both a student at Rollins, and now in my staff capacity. She is an invaluable member of our front-of-house team, and is beloved by students, faculty, staff, and patrons. This weekend, we had three virtually sold-out shows here at the Annie Russell. Carmen put in extra hours to ensure the bathrooms were stocked and the theatre was tidy. She communicates so well with our student employees, and has worked with them to create a lost and found system. Our day-to-day operations would suffer greatly without Carmen on the team. I want to give a WOW service recognition to Jen Atwell who exemplified the service standards. It started when I requested for her to print our business card size advertisement of our new careers website. She expressed her concerns that it looked too similar to the Rollins business card so she collaborated with Marketing to confirm if she should still print it. Since Marketing saw it did look very similar to the existing business card layout, Jen took it upon herself to revise the layout to ensure it does not and what she returned to us was amazing, at no charge! It doesn't stop there. I sent her the job fair flyer to print and she also took it upon herself to match the layout of the business card advertisement. The flyer also looked very well and marketable. With these new flyers and business cards, we will be able to advertise about our Rollins work culture and the new careers website confidently. Thank you Jen for your service excellence! You w ent above and beyond, and truly WOWed us!

I am so grateful to have the privilege of working with Leon everyday. It is particularly awesome to behold his management skills in the face of a crisis. With Hurricane Matthew rapidly approaching last week, he worked very hard very quickly to ensure that our students would be safe, informed, comfortable and provided for. Leon managed to turn a scary situation for our students into a super fun sleepover! He is so magnetic, fun and energetic, it's impossible to be around him without cracking a smile which always makes hard times easier. Lori graciously agreed to lead the workshop and connected with the kids in a big way. I did not realize until lately that she has continued to work with the Elevate kids on her own over the past year... despite a challenging work load and multiple conflicting demands. The Holt School sponsors one scholarship per year for a student selected from this program. Most are first generation college bound students who have little to no support from family and parents. I see them on a weekly basis and they are always abnormally cheerful even after dealing with some of the toughest people who come to the campus on a daily basis. When dealing with money, you have to be exceptionally detail oriented and emotions are high on the other end because you are dealing with people who want answers on the spot and many that are dealing with complex financial aid, loan, or other complicated issues. This week I had an emotionally charged student who was panicking because her bank did not process a check correctly and she needed it or would get evicted. Despite the over exasperation of the student who did not treat Pat & Julie properly, they bent over backwards to calm this student down and find alternative ways to help her. They were amazing. They are two of the most unsung heroes of this campus. They have been able to answer every question I have ever thrown at them. They always get back to me immediately. They seem to have a name for every face t hat comes to their office. They are so wonderful. They always have a smile to share (and a lollipop!). What an absolute asset to the Rollins family. We are so lucky to have them. Thank you Pat & Julie. You make me look forward to the long walk I do to get to your office in this summer heat!

A representative from ICUBA came to campus yesterday to help educate employees about the new Rally wellness program. There were about 80 employees in attendance in Galloway, and the acoustics made it somewhat difficult to hear. Travis was attending the event as a participant and took it upon himself to help locate a mic and set it up so the audience could hear the presenter much better. The participants even applauded when she started speaking in the mic. No one asked Travis to do this, but his initiative to help the situation made the presentation go much more smoothly. Thanks, Travis!

Betsey just replaced my old computer. She accommodated my schedule to replace the computer while I was away for an Olin learning day as not to affect my workday. She was gracious and kind in working with me to schedule a day for the service to be completed. She delivered my computer at 7:30am on Monday morning, getting into work earlier than normal to match my schedule. When the computer was installed she had to continue to troubleshoot issues. Then the next day I realized I forgot important information on the computer and she hooked it back up to retrieve it for me. Throughout the entire process she was kind, knowledgeable, patient, and provided excellent customer service. Thank you Betsey!

Patty goes above and beyond, she is a true team player! She without hesitation, took over a major project this summer that needed to be completed in a very short period of time. The job was completed by her with the help of her co-workers, but I have never had anyone outside our department work so hard to support the needs of our department. She exhibits all of our Service Excellence standards seemingly effortlessly. Patty is a true asset to our community! Thank you Patty!

To: David Zajchowski
On June 1st our HR department went live with our new Applicant Tracking System called, PageUp! A big part of that successful launch was thanks to our project leader, David. Throughout this integration, David really embodied the four service excellence standards to ensure a successful launch on our target date. This project involved a lot of collaboration between our office (HR office), the student employment team, Marketing and Communications, IT, and the PageUp team. Throughout the entire project he made sure to be respectful of everybody's time and prior commitments, while continuously looping in the entire project team on the different steps that were being taken and the progress that was being made. He was open-minded to our ideas and often helped guide us to solutions that benefited both HR and the student employment team. The launch of this project will in turn allow us to give better service to our hiring managers and allow for more innovative, individualized, and successful searches. Thank you David for your leadership throughout this project and for bringing this project to fruition. We couldn't have done it without you!

Udeth exemplifies the true meaning of service excellence at Rollins. I recognize that everyone has priorities and meaningful work that helps us move our mission forward; however whenever I contact Udeth with a question or request for data he is always willing to lend a helping hand and teach me something new to help me perform my role better. For example, I recently requested some institutional demographic data and Udeth was extremely responsive and exceeded my expectations. Udeth has helped me and countless other colleagues across campus by consistently providing service and value beyond what his customers originally thought they needed. His strengths include focusing on empathy (The Golden Rule), focusing on meeting his consumer’s expectations (The Platinum Rule) and focusing on creating value and benefits beyond expectations (The Double Platinum Rule). I appreciate you and thank you for your continued service to the Rollins community!

I'd like to submit this WOW in gratitude to Joe and Shaffaq, who spent the last day and a half upgrading the Reference Computer Lab in the library. Joe replaced our old workstations with computers that were not only faster, but that allowed us to finally get rid of the wobbly and unattractive mounts that were previously under the desks. The upgrade involved quite a bit of manual labor and technical know-how. Joe and Shaffaq spent hours removing old hardware, rearranging cables and cords, and making the entire lab look great. Their diligence is greatly appreciated, as this is a very popular lab among our students and other patrons.

This has been quite the year for Olin Library. We have seen an overwhelming number of students, staff and faculty using the building every day, not just for studying but for events and meetings. During our 2 weeks where we were open for 24 hours during finals, this place was PACKED ALL DAY AND NIGHT! And we could not have gotten through this year without our incredible team of housekeepers, Vefi, Luis and Gloria. They work incredibly hard every day to keep this building clean and functioning, and I can say that is not an easy job at all! From scrubbing up chicken wings left on the floor of group study rooms, to mopping up overflowing toilets, to wiping footprints off walls, cleaning stains out of the carpets, to dusting every nook and cranny of this building, and then just cleaning up after students every day and helping prepare and clean up after big events, I have never seen anyone work harder or care more about a place than these three people. They are a part of our family here. They take care of the building, they take care of us, and we could not continue servicing our campus community without them. Luis, Gloria and Vefi go over and beyond every day. The Olin Library is constantly busy, every space is being used all of the time, and they work so hard every day to make sure it this space is clean, comfortable and functioning. From all of us at Olin, thank you so much for what you do EVERY DAY. Vefi, Luis and Gloria, this building would collapse without you.

I contacted Teasa today to see if she could provide some Rollins "swag" for participants in an upcoming ACS Math workshop on campus. She called me back almost immediately and said she could provide everything on my list! I needed 20 pocket folders, 20 pens and 20 pencils, which she had for me as soon as I went over to get them. Not only that, she gave me some Winter Park guides I asked about once I got there. Teasa was the epitome of responsive and collaborative. She is clearly very competent in her job, and treats everyone she encounters with cheerfulness and respect. I don't know what I would have done without Teasa's help today. Now our workshop participants will have some special Rollins mementos to use during their visit. - Thank you, Teasa! (Actually, Teasa provided some items for our computer science advisory board members last year too, and I neglected to "wow" her at the time, so this is long overdue!)

For graduation, we needed to order medallions for our students that had always been taken care of by an employee who has since retired. We realized at the last minute that we did not have the medallions, and Tina quickly figured out how to find the receipts from the order last year so we could see where they had been purchased, and she ordered them immediately so our students got them in time for graduation. It was very confusing and last minute, not to mention time consuming, but she responded immediately and helped figure out what to do. Katie deserves a Wow for not going crazy with how many requests we send her on a weekly basis. She met me first thing in the morning in my office and right on time to teach me all about WebEx and what it can do (great for conference calls- you all should use it!). She has been so helpful with the onboarding of our students into Blackboard as well as transferring shells of old classes into new classes for our instructors. Our programs are on a different academic cycle than the rest of campus and we get some seriously complicated requests. None have been too big for Katie to solve, and she does them so cheerfully! On Tuesday, April 26th, Ann Francis received recognition from the City of Winter Park for the volunteer work she has done over many years for the City. In particular, Ann has brought a group of Eco-Rollins students to every Earth Day celebration that Winter Park has ever done, helping to educate children about the benefits of sustainability and caring for our planet. Ann spends her entire day at the tent, talking with kids, helping them to tie-dye shirts and providing a fabulous role model for the children who attend AND for our own Eco-Rollins students who help out. The Rollins campus continually improves its sustainable profile each and every year because of the steady leadership of Ann Francis and we were pleased to help the City of Winter Park honor her.

This past Friday I was delivering desk blotter to the Presidents Office. Upon installing the blotter I identified that it would not fit correctly on the President's desk, as it was covering up the grommet holes where all of Grant's wires ran through and created an uneven and non-functional surface. It just so happened that Will was working with Jillian on something, so I kindly interrupted him to ask if he could assist in any way, as the only solution to fix the problem was to disconnect all the computer wires, get longer ones and rewire his workstation. Without hesitation, Will looked at the issue and with complete confidence said, "no problem, I get this done within the hour." Will took the initiate and solved the problem, and I am very grateful for this. It was all about being in the right place, at the right time, and having the right person there to assist. While this may seem like no big deal to Will, I can't thank him enough for going out of his way to help out a fellow colleague.

While I am a little delayed on this WOW recognition, I really wanted to take the time to recognize Lauren and John Grau for their efforts to bring a running group together every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon after work to train for the Corporate 5k that just took place in early April. Lauren and John demonstrated true teamwork putting together an interval (walk/run) training program and offering it to our entire campus to bring the Rollins community together. This was a great way to not only promote wellness, but also give an opportunity for our community to come together from different departments who don't always interact on a day-to-day basis. I joined the group myself and even though I wasn't able to make every run, I truly enjoyed the ones I did attend and the staff and faculty members I was able to meet and interact with along the way. I witnessed Lauren's personalized attention to all those in the running group and motiv ating everybody to not give up. Kirk has been there every step of the way, specifically when it comes to the behavior of the outside workers. He very respectfully considered that we would be out of our normal routine and showed up several times a day to make sure things were running smoothly. When I had a problem, he came right over and offered solutions. Since I didn't know where to start with getting repairs made to the Alfond Pool Office, new furniture for the office and making sure that a sewage back-up didn't occur in the future, I went to Lori's office about the new furniture. She worked with Amber-Leigh VanKuren and me to start the process of notifying Maria Martinez about the loss of furniture and if insurance would cover the loss. Then she called in John Overberger to brain storm with us about what would be the best thing to replace the ruined furniture. As we were discussing the process, she even called David Markland to find out what needed to be done so this wouldn't happen in the future as we didn't want to have to replace the furniture a 2nd or 3rd time. Since John had some experience with a similar type of incident, he brought up that the baseboards and dry wall should also be inspected.

During our discussion, John remembered that there were some items in storage that could be used to set up cubicles and the cost would be minimal as we would only have to purchase those items that were needed, not the entire system. This would also help to keep things off the floor in the event of a future mishap.

Both Lori and John were very responsive to Amber-Leigh's and my needs. Respectful of what we were trying to accomplish as quickly and cost effectively as possible. It was a very collaborative meeting and I was impressed with their professionalism and knowledge of what needed to be done in order to get a solution in place as quickly as possible.

From setting up our secure scanner to checking every individual machine in our office to make sure that Lync is set up so that it can be used effectively to communicate between the front desk, our director, the Nurse Practitioners and the Counselors, he has diligently worked through every problem, concern and user error we could throw at him! He is a lifesaver to us and we always know it will get taken care of if Will is working on it. We are lucky to have him!

I've been lucky enough to work with Jen on several projects and she never fails to be thorough, speedy, creative, and attentive. Most recently she got us out of a bind when we were running late on a booklet project for the an upcoming library event, and in the past she has been kind enough to make other last-minute changes when we need rush print and design work. She really embodies service excellence and because I have so much confidence in her, I never stress over deign work. I know I can count on her, and I always enjoying working with her. Thank you Jen for all your fantastic work!

Jen has consistently come to the aid of the Olin Library whenever we need refreshing graphic designing ideas, promotional materials and event marketing material. She always brings inspiring and new ideas, but recently not only did she help design our material for our upcoming Book a Year event, but she stepped in to help us with other marketing material. She is always reliable, and a consummate professional and I never have to worry if things will be done in time or reflect what we want. They ALWAYS ARE! She brings a smile to all our faces and we breath a sigh of relief when Jen is helping us. She's incredible and truly went over and beyond to help us. Thank you!

Appreciate Rob’s willingness to problem solve and find solutions. When posed with the question, “here’s an idea; how can we make it happen?” he takes the time figure it out. Also very much value his flexibility! When situations pop up unexpectedly with events (as was the case last evening) he is there lending support. I’m grateful for all he does! And this extends to his team too – Jon, Betsey and everyone else who most recently helped support our candidate forum. Thank you!

Robert Whetstone is a co-worker here at Rollins that I am truly honored to know and extremely grateful to work alongside. He is a constant source of support to so many of us here – from students to faculty to staff to community members. Last night was just one example of that. During our candidate forum, he stepped in to help as we addressed an over-crowding and space issue. He and his willingness to help, problem solve, and lead set an example for us all, and is one that I constantly learn from. Thank you, sir, for all that you did (last night) and (continue) to do!

I greatly appreciate Greg’s willingness to continually partner on events. I’m constantly asking, “Oooh! Here’s an idea; do you think Student Media would want to be involved?” and with Greg and the students he works with the answer is “yes!” I very much value their enthusiasm to explore new ideas, work out the kinks, and problem-solve when things change suddenly. Last night during our candidate forum when the venue changed at the last minute, Greg was literally sprinting across campus to get the right equipment to make it work. His dedication and flexibility are examples for us all! Thank you!

To: Leslie Fair
This September will mark the 10-year Anniversary of one of the best things that ever happened to Rollins College - the hiring of Leslie Fair to work in the Division of Institutional Advancement. I remember the first time I met Leslie in her Interview - her smile lit up the room and everyone in it knew we were in the presence of someone special. Over the years Leslie's sunny disposition, fun personality, and hard work ethic to learn and grow both professionally and personally has positively impacted so many. For all these years, Leslie has provided all of us in the Division and in the larger Rollins Family an anchor who fills so many roles to keep all of us focused on providing service excellence to each other and to the donors whose gifts she is tasked with managing the processing of every day. Just so you can have an understanding of how many gifts that is, last year Leslie and her team processed 3,802 gifts! Best of all, her streng ths as an encourager, harmonizer, compromiser, gatekeeper and standard setter are all rooted in a deep love and pride in everything Rollins.

This nomination for Leslie today is written by me but represents the gratitude of the entire Annual Fund Team for her hard work again this year in consistently going “above and beyond” to get the job done even if it means working late nights or coming in over the holidays. Recent examples of larger than normal gift processing projects fall include the annual scholarship fundraisers for the Crummer and Holt Schools, the Founder's Day Challenge and the end of the calendar year gifts. In addition, she has trained two new (excellent!) team members (Lesa Duran-Daher and Marie Spinale) to manage various aspects of the gift processing process and remains committed to her multi-year quest to earn her Bachelor's Degree from the Holt School by taking night classes. Last but not least she was a proud participant in last fall’s Rollins HR Leadership Academy, volunteered as a guest DJ for WPRK and in her community and is an amazing mother to Corbin and wife to Mark. Thank you Leslie for all you do as a valued member of the IA Team and Rollins Family.

The Campus Safety office is open 7 days a week, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. During the school's closure weeks there is no Housekeeping personnel working. Sharon not only emptied the trash cans, but she went out of her way to obtain cleaning supplies and cleaned the entire office including the two restrooms. This really made it a better place for the rest of us that work here. In my opinion she deserves a lot more than just this WOW.

To: Derrick Boisette
On Sunday November 1, 2015 I had the great pleasure of spending the afternoon with one of my favorite alumni, Augusta Yust Hume '39 as we celebrated her 98th Birthday. There is something a little extra special about Augusta for she represents the best of Rollins’ past, present & future. She grew up spending time on our campus as a teenager for her father was William F. Yust, Director of the Rollins’ Library from 1931-42. She met the love of her life the late Warren Hume '39 as a student and the two married on their graduation day in 1939 (although she told me they eloped two years earlier in secret so he would not lose his football scholarship!) Rollins has always been a huge part of Augusta's life for in addition to Warren's longtime service as a dedicated trustee of the College, the Warren and Augusta Hume Foundation have made many generous gifts to the College to support things like the Office of Com munity Engagement, The Rollins Fund, the Alfond Sports Center, The Cornell Fine Arts Museum and the Rollins College Childhood Development Center.

Like me, one of Augusta’s favorite places was Dinky Dock and that is where we enjoyed her birthday cupcakes after pushing Augusta in her wheelchair for a nice walk on the path behind Lake Virginia. She enjoyed everything she saw of our beautiful Rollins but it was our visit to the Cornell Museum where she was especially thrilled to see the gallery named for her father. Now I must admit here that 98-year old Augusta's memory is not the best, especially in recalling recent events but she was overjoyed to be in her Father's Gallery and wanted to see every work of art exhibited up close and read every bit of information about the work as well as try to understand what it was about. We had just missed the last docent led tour of the day and there was only two staff members working in the Gallery - the front desk receptionist and Derrick Boisette, a part-time Rollins Security Officer. Both of them were proud to meet William Yust's daughter and had greeted h er warmly but that was the extent of their knowledge about Augusta.

Now I love art but I very quickly felt out of my element trying to read every single label and make sense of each work for Augusta. This is where Derrick Boisette stepped in and provided Augusta with the above and beyond service rooted in genuine kindness for her and a desire to help her understand what she was seeing. Derrick patiently announced the title of each work along with the artists name, date it was created and country of origin along with a synopsis of each work. Not only did he do this in the Yust Gallery but in all the Galleries for almost all the works. Augusta loved every minute so much so that when we were on our way out of the Gallery and passed the Yust Gallery again she wanted to see every work displayed and hear all about it all over again! While I was visibly perplexed and quite unsure what to do, Derrick proceeded to tell her again about works that he just described to her during our first time seeing them not that long ago and all the while with a gentle smile and the same helpful tone. I honestly believe Derrick would have taken Augusta through the Museum all over again if I did not quickly announce to Augusta's dismay that it was time to go and quickly made our way to the door.

I am proud to work at Rollins for we are genuinely blessed to have a family feeling here among all the members of the Rollins community but I feel compelled to take a few moments to publicly thank Derrick for taking so much time to model integrity, care and leadership. Derrick helped to make Augusta's Museum tour special for her - not because he had to or that anyone would ever know about it, it didn't even matter to Derrick if Augusta remembered it later. Derrick invested his time in helping make a 98-year old woman's birthday a little bit more special for it was the right thing to do and that quality is what the best of those who represent our College everyday share. In the end, I do think by giving so much of himself to Augusta that day, Derrick got just as much out of it as she did and I know I was inspired to see them together for in watching Augusta and this young part-time security officer interact I felt like I was truly seeing one of life's g reatest masterpieces.

After our discussion he asked if we wanted to replace it with a TV that they already had that would match the other displays and he could remove the computer system it was hooked to so that we had easy access to the display and USB. In addition, Patrick came back and add a USB extension cord for one of the monitors so that we no longer needed to get on a chair to access it. I have worked side by side with Teodoro Santiago on 3rd shift at the Alfond Sports Center for the past 6 years. Throughout the years our relationship has been one in which we have worked closely together to meet the housekeeping needs of the Athletics Department, anticipating events by preparing facility areas before hand and cleaning up afterward. I have always found Teodoro to be strong contributor through his efforts to the accomplishment of both the goals of Athletics and to those of the College. An example of his commitment to Service Excellence can be found in his performance this Labor Day weekend for the 2015 Rollins Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Working alone, Teodoro cleaned the entire building, removing a great volume of trash and restoring all public areas for use after 7 games each day on both Friday and Saturday. When I realized that Word 2013 didn't have the same label applications as Word 2010, my head began spinning round and round. While I was breathing fire, I dialed 6363 and who answered the phone? .... Jon Schmedinghoff. I found out later that it was just his first week on the job at the Help Desk and he gets a fire-breathing, spinning head crazy woman heart-sick over losing her easy label fix. How and Why did Word 2013 take away my old label function? We all know that our lives depend on labels. Poor Jon. He must have thought he had gotten a call from a rubber room somewhere. He did the research and found a label fix for me in Word 2013 the next day. The birds began singing and the flowers were swaying in the breeze. The fire breathing dragon calmed down and turned back into a human being once again. Thank you Jon.

Luke has been instrumental in making sure fall orientation information is featured on the Rollins homepage and completely revamped many pages on the Residential Life & Explorations site to ensure that our students and families can get the information they need easily. The site looks beautiful and is very clear. Luke has worked tirelessly to include what seems like a million updates and edits to the website. Our team is truly grateful for his assistance and collaboration on this project.

We were forced at the end of last week to vacate our upstairs offices due to a bat infestation issue. We called IT to help us move desktop systems to various temporary locations in our downstairs area. Jordan's attitude was just terrific! He helped us navigate all the unanticipated connection issues that result from hasty relocation decisions. It was late on Friday and he helped ensure that we bypassed delays and that we were connected before the weekend. Thank you, Jordan - great job!!

I've had a lot of good experiences with the people in IT over the past few years, and I am always appreciative of the help they provide me. This week I've had so much help from Travis in IT, that I wanted to acknowledge his service with a Wow. I brought my PC in on Monday morning with a list of questions and problems and Travis went to work side by side with me, going through one issue after another. Perhaps I should have taken care of these issues as they arose, but instead, I let things accumulate into a big pile and asked IT to tackle them all at once. Despite all the issues I raised, and it must have seemed like one after another after another to him, he worked with me skillfully and patiently until we got everything working as it should on my PC. Then, I asked if it might be possible to transfer files from my PC to my new Macbook, and he said, "Sure, bring your Macbook in." I did just that the next day and, once again, Travis worked patiently and capably until every issue was resolved. Then, when I asked about virus protection on my new Macbook, he volunteered assistance in that department as well, explaining how updates would work, etc. I have to say, in Travis, IT has a staff member who knows how to make things work for people like me, no matter how demanding our requests might be. I say "Wow" for him.

To: Darla Moore
Darla Moore, Rollins College’s Archival Specialist in the Olin Library, has consistently provided service excellence to me, always going above and beyond in a fast, professional manner. For the past two years I have worked as an Annual Giving officer, Darla and her colleagues in the Department of Archives and Special Collections have become my partners in helping to connect with alumni around the country, especially those that have been out of touch for some time. I know that I can count on Darla to help me come up with something special to share on my visits. Her hard work has helped me make those important personalized connections which in turn help raise more support for the College as well as continue to add to the Rollins story today.

In early July I contacted Darla because I was looking for something special to share with a 90-year old alumna later that month when I would be visiting her in North Carolina. While not as mobile and now blind, this member of the Rollins Class of 1946’s pride in her College was as strong as the days when she walked on our campus. As usual, Darla quickly thought of something great – but added that unfortunately this item was not digitized and would be difficult to share with anyone. Darla ended the call saying she would check with Dr. Zhang and her other colleagues and see what they could do, but could not promise anything.

Less than 24 hours later, I received an email with a digitized link to the special item Darla suggested. Thanks to Darla and her colleagues Dr. Wenxian Zhang and Paul Gindlesperger, the audio recording of Hamilton Holt's final commencement speech is now available on their website! As it would be for any member of the Rollins family, the idea that I could hear the voice of our iconic eighth president at the conclusion of his 24 years of service in this role was exciting. I knew instantly it would be special for our alumna, who was a student here during his leadership. Thanks to Darla and her team, you too can hear the June 1949 parting words of this legendary man — words he felt important enough to try to share with the graduates of the Class of 1949 as they set out on brand new adventures yet unknown. How fitting it is that we can hear Holt’s words just as the tenure of our newest leader, President Grant Cornwell, is beginning.

I proudly nominate my friend Darla Moore for her important role in reminding us that we are all part of an inspiring long line of generations of leaders both in the classroom and out. The audio of Holt’s words will remind my alumna and all who listen to it that we are all part of this amazing place, the memories of which live in our hearts and minds long after we leave here. It is also a stirring reminder that just like Holt, a little piece of each one of us stays here and will forever be a piece of Rollins College.

Scott has been absolutely amazing! He always goes above and beyond. This most recent experience was last night. The WPI and Venture Pitch Finals were going on at the same time. Scott worked with the schedule to ensure that each department received the photos they needed of the event. We also needed a quick turn around of the photos and Scott stayed late (after 10pm) to edit and upload the photos we needed to send out for press. Scott deserves the recognition for all he does here at Rollins. He is a great photographer, but an even better team player.

Mayor Jacob's Youth Leadership Conference was on campus last Friday. Phil went above and beyond helping me place the directional signs for the conference around campus and then followed-up by picking-up the signs after the event. This may seem like a small task, but it's essential to the success of the event and one less thing the organizer has to put on the to-do list. Phil is always happy help and does so with a great smile and attitude. He's a true Tar and our campus is a much better place because he is here.

I think Peggy Smith-Clayman deserves a shout out for her superior handling of a tough situation this week. After talking with hundreds of senior citizens interested in taking classes with the RCLL (new classes started this week), we had one woman in her 80s who became confused and clammy. She was even thinking of driving home. Peggy's fast thinking was worried this woman might be having a stroke. She called fire & rescue, kept this lovely lady safe and off the road, and handled the situation with such grace and calmness. It is such an honor working with good, caring people like Peggy.

I just wanted to publicly recognize and thank one of the most supportive teams a person could ask for. I truly have the privilege of working with some of the best of the best - Meredith, Tim, Jeremy, Sofia, Raul, Alex, Mike, and Larry (and at a place like Rollins, that has so many outstanding individuals, that's saying something!). These last few weeks leading up to spring break have been really jam packed and full for our office (as they have for pretty much everyone else on campus!), but today especially, was one of the busiest for me. And it was wonderful - because of them and the students and community partners we work alongside. My colleagues, in particular, were joyful, hard working, thoughtful, present, resourceful, caring, and made today fun and much less hectic than it could have been. I just want them to know how much I appreciate them and everything they bring to our space!

I have been a student adviser for about five years. During that whole time I have always had a few stray advisees "on the books." Students who I know have left but for some reason but that get stuck in the online system and I struggle to find out if maybe they came back or something. It is a real waste of time. This year, for the first time ever, due to Penelope's efforts (and it really is an effort) I now have an accurate listing of advisees.

Every year the library organizes a reception to honor the donors to the Book-a-Year program. In recent years we have done this in conjunction with the Winter With The Writers program. Melanie organizes the whole thing -- dates, rooms, food, drink, publicity, invitations, speakers, musicians, everything! This year, for the first time, I did not worry about the event. Melanie can be trusted to cover every detail. This year out speaker was Claire Strom who wrote to me to say "Thanks for thinking of us for last night's event. It was great fun and gave the students a wonderful opportunity to present before a friendly, engaged audience. Melanie was great to work with and made everything very easy."

Over the past year, my department has had the pleasure of working with Cory more and more. I’ve recently recruited a new team member and he has welcomed her and been a resource in onboarding her to the nuances of financial aid within Banner. But specifically I wanted to send a “WOW” because Cory has been such a partner in reconciling our Perkins Loans. We had part of the information in our department and the remaining part resided between Financial Aid and a 3rd party vendor. Cory was responsive to letting us know where he was on his side of this project, collaborative with my team, and competent in developing processes to monitor and proactively manage this issue going forward. While I was out of the office, Joe stepped up to work with our Annual Giving's phone-a-thon program to make sure the workstations they use to are PCI compliant. After imaging the workstations, he worked with the software vendor that we use and our Network Team to make sure everything works properly and still maintains security. If this had waited until I was back in, we'd have lost a day of testing and configuration, which means we might have missed our desired start time for the phone-a-thon. Thanks Joe!

On Sunday, January 10 we were outside of the Bush building celebrating Sorority Recruitment Bid Day. There were about 200 students there to welcome their 170 new members and about 10 staff members. Robert Whetstone from Campus Safety was there, in his Church clothes, since it was a Sunday afternoon, off the clock to watch his daughter be announced as a new member of a sorority.  When a student tripped and cut her leg badly, her friends brought her over to a chair and propped her leg up. I had hardly blinked and Robert was there, managing the situation and working to let the distraught student know she would be ok. When medical equipment arrived from a Campus Safety officer on duty (who also was helpful and did everything needed) but before the ambulance arrived, Robert had tucked his tie into his dress shirt, put on medical gloves and wrapped and bandaged the students’ leg.  He said he was just doing his job but it seemed just like Robert, going above and beyond to do the right thing in the situation without hesitating. He was inspiring to the staff and a comfort to the students.

Son provided me with excellent service today! I've been struggling with Java issues on my computer for the past few days and finally got around to calling the Help Desk today. Son listened carefully as I explained my issue with the computer and the systems that I was no longer able to access because of the problem with Java. He then accessed my computer remotely and quickly located the problem and began to fix it. As he continued, he asked thoughtful questions and I was able to let him know about other issues that I was experiencing as well - he took the time to fix those issues also even though my original call was note related to those issues.  During our call, I realized that I needed to be in a meeting in 5 minutes. I asked him if he could still continue working on my computer even if I needed to step away and Son said yes. When I returned in 30 minutes, I found a nice note on the Notepad on my computer with an update from Son stating the Java and other issues had been fixed and what to di if I experience additional pop-up messages on my computer.  Thanks Son! I appreciate your attention, competence and care.
