Rollins Profiles
A sense of community is one of the many characteristics that makes
Rollins College special. Let us introduce you to a few of the
people who make up our community. Meet some of "R-People!"

Rachel Newcomb, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Anthropology
Where were you born or what city do you consider your hometown?
Rock Hill, South Carolina
What attracted you to Rollins?
I love the size of the College and the warmth of the
faculty, and I feel that these elements set the stage
for effective learning and teaching. I also like the
campus architecture!
What is your personal educational philosophy?
I believe that the purpose of education is to break
down boundaries and transgress the limits of what we
previously believed was possible. By exposing students
to other ways of thinking, we not only encourage them to
innovate but also to approach future experiences with an
open mind and a willingness to learn from others.
What are your current research interests?
Currently I am looking into how women's experiences
of Islam differ from men's, and how these experiences
can add a significant perspective to our understanding
of this religion and its varied practices.
What would be your dream vacation?
A culinary tour of Italy.
Would you please list a few of your favorite books?
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Persian
Bride by James Buchan and The English Patient
by Michael Ondaatje are three favorites.
How do you spend your free time or weekends?
I enjoy exploring Orlando, trying new restaurants,
catching up on reading and checking out garage sales.
What is something most people might be surprised to
learn about you?
I run 5K and 10K races and am training for a
marathon.
