Department of Political Science

Welcome to the Department of Political Science!

The department offers a major and a minor in political science.  Students of politics examine government institutions, the making and execution of political decisions, and the political resolution of societal conflicts. In addition, political scientists grapple with the fundamental question of how societies ought to be constituted. Subfields translate theoretical concerns into practical knowledge.

Students can take part in the Washington Semester Program and/or travel the world with political science faculty!

Why Study Politics?

Life is already political.  Politics, then, is not just something that we study and read about: it is something that we live.  In ways large and

small, abstract and particular, global and local, theoretical and practical, our everyday lives are shaped by powers, ideologies, and customs.  Politics happens to us whether we see it or not.  But by studying political science, we can understand, become conscious of, engage with, or work against the forces that give meaning and shape to our condition.
