Cash Management: Making Money Work for Your Nonprofit
In these difficult economic times, it becomes even more important for nonprofit organizations to make money work and monitor areas where funds can unexpectedly “fly away”. In this session, participants will get an overview of how to generate and hold onto precious dollars. We will survey budgets, special fundraising events, how to detect fraud, issues with alternative investments, unrelated business income, and other timely issues.

You will learn:

  • cash management and budget techniques
  • a summary of the IRS’ view of special events (gaming)
  • how-to’s on detecting potential instances of fraud/theft in your organization
  • the audit risks inherent in alternative investments
  • an update on recent IRS audit/determinations with regard to Unrelated Business Income Tax
  • other timely nonprofit accounting/tax issues

dmojaDave Moja is a tax services director at McGladrey & Pullen/RSM McGladrey. He is the Florida lead for not-for-profit organizations and works with all of the Florida McGladrey offices on NFP tax and consulting issues. Dave speaks extensively throughout the U.S. at conferences, through webinars, at chapter meetings, and in boardrooms regarding issues that affect the public sector. Dave has approximately 22 years of experience providing tax, advice, consultation, attest and audit services to clients in the not-for-profit sector, including hospitals. He has provided tax consulting and preparation of Form 990 for hundreds of exempt organizations. Prior to joining RSM McGladrey, he worked for Price Waterhouse, another public accounting firm ranked in the top ten nationwide, and a CPA firm specializing in not-for-profit organizations. He was Chief Financial Officer for a major international mission organization. He also managed his own CPA firm for seven years. Dave is a CPA in Florida, Colorado and Georgia. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Florida Institute of CPAs. He serves on the board of the Brevard Cultural Alliance and the Community Foundation of Brevard. Dave received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Florida State University in 1985.

cwordenClay Worden is an Audit Partner in the Orlando office of McGladrey & Pullen. Clay’s primary focus has been providing assurance and business consulting services to a variety of clients. In addition, Clay serves as the Orlando office Practice Leader, responsible for leading growth in Central Florida and ensuring office adherence to firm policies. Clay is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Treasurer, The Golden Rule Foundation. In 2005, Clay was honored as a Forty Under 40 award recipient by the Orlando Business Journal. This award recognized those under the age of forty that have made major contributions to the Central Florida business community and to their respective professions. Clay was also recognized as the 2005 Volunteer of the Year for the State of Florida by the Small Business Development Center at the University of Central Florida. Clay received his Bachelors of Art Degree in Accounting, Flagler College with additional graduate level studies at the University of South Florida.

Clearing the Hurdles and Pitfalls of the Comprehensive Form 990:
What the IRS is Saying Now
It’s been a year since the IRS revised t he Form 990 and it still presents interesting hurdles, pitfalls, and opportunities for nonprofit organizations and those who prepare their annual returns. This seminar reveiws the changes and gives participants insight into how to best face the challenges of the changes. This seminar is interactive with analysis, sample Form 990 and case studies.

You will learn:

  • Otain working knowledge of the Comprehensive Form 990
  • Analysis of the changes and what they mean for preparing the Form 990
  • Be given specific examples and case studies
  • What to know when working with a CPA firm on Form 990 preparation

mbattsMike Batts is the founder and managing shareholder of Batts, Morrison, Wales & Lee, P.A., an Orlando-based accounting firm dedicated exclusively to serving nonprofit organizations and their affiliates. He has more than 20 years of experience as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) serving hundreds of nonprofit organizations.  Mike is a summa cum laude graduate of Stetson University.  He serves as an advisory board member for two colleges and currently chairs two other boards.  He served on the Legal Framework Work Group of the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, a legislative advisory panel convened at the request of the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.  Mike has led numerous discussions in seminars and conferences nationally, including American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and his firm’s own Annual Nonprofit Conference.  He is active legislatively, both on the state and federal levels, having successfully drafted and lobbied for a number of changes to laws affecting nonprofit organizations.

cwilsonCarol Wilson is a CPA who has worked in the nonprofit sector for over ten years. She completed her Master of Business Administration degree from the Roy E. Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College in April 2008. Over the past three years, she has taught workshops on nonprofit accounting and budgeting for the Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center at Rollins College and the Grant Professionals Network of Central Florida. Previously she served as Accounting Manager in the Finance Department at Rollins College from 2000 – 2008. In that role she enjoyed teaching members of the campus community about budget management. Prior to Rollins, Carol assisted with the start up and was executive director of Florida Bicycle Association, a not-for-profit organization.
