Certificate in Proposal Writing

A really good grant proposal writer is always in demand, so if you enjoy research and writing, love a challenge or just want to win increased funding for your nonprofit, you’ll want to consider pursuing a Certificate in Proposal Writing. It offers the tools to develop carefully targeted, well-written proposals that make a compelling case for an organization and its mission. The Certificate in Proposal Writing will guide you through the proposal-writing process from start to finish.

The Philanthropy Center's proposal writing workshop series is unique in that it was carefully developed to be interactive through the use of speakers, group discussions, group exercises, and the completion of an actual proposal, which is peer-reviewed. During the proposal writing series, four prominent area funders speak about funding, proposal writing, and what they look for in a proposal.

Participants of our Certificate in Proposal Writing series rate it highly:

Fantastic series!!! Great teacher!!! Great handout materials!!! Quality speakers!!! Great homework assignments!! Good networking!!

Great! It made this forbidding subject accessible, understandable, and attainable!

Wow! Even as an experienced proposal writer, I learned a tremendous amount, and I am excited to implement it in my work.

This is the only course of its kind that affords you the opportunity to meet face-to-face with local funders to hear what they look for in grant applications. You will have a critique of the proposal you wrote while attending the workshop series. Students enrolled in the Certificate in Proposal Writing program receive the text, Winning Grants by Mim Carlson, as well as a three-ring binder of materials. Workshops do not have to be completed within one calendar year; however, the proposal writing courses are taken in sequence in order to receive the maximum benefit from the program. The Certificate in Proposal Writing is awarded after all 39 hours of the program are completed, a proposal prepared and submitted to the instructor, and all fees paid.

You will learn to:

  • clearly identify the problem to be solved
  • formulate a concise need statement corroborated by supportive data
  • write a need statement tied to outcome-based evaluation in an engaging story-telling style
  • capture the grant reviewer's interest
  • master creating a proposal budget and narrative text that addresses sustainability.
