Gordon
E. Howell, associate professor of physical education,
has been named the College's Raymond W. Greene Chair of
Health and Physical Education. The Chair was established
in 1967 by Raymond W. Greene, who stipulated that the
chairholder should encourage reverence for the "Amazing
Creation of the Human Body and Its Functions."
"My scholarly interests have dramatically changed
through the years, with the chair providing the impetus
for my becoming a sport sociologist and supporting the
research and development behind the courses I teach,"
said Howell. "Were it not for a modest stipend that
accompanies this honor, I would not be able to gather
the data, nor engage in the travel that has allowed me
to study both in the United States and in Europe."
A member of the Rollins faculty for 29 years, Howell
received his bachelor's degree from Western Carolina
University, his master's in teaching from Rollins
College, and his Ed.D. from Highland University. His
current area of research is focused on the "figurational
dynamics of racial stratification of sport in the United
States." Howell teaches interdisciplinary courses
related to sport in society from a sociological
perspective. He is a member of the national faculty of
the United States Sports Academy.
