Samuel C. Certo, professor of management and former dean
of the Crummer School, has been appointed the first
holder of the Steinmetz Chair of Management at the
Rollins College Crummer Graduate School of Business. The
Steinmetz Chair is one of four endowed chairs at the
Crummer School.
Rollins College President Rita Bornstein appointed
Certo to the chair. "Sam is an outstanding teacher and
prolific author," she said, "and it is a pleasure to
recognize his contributions to his students, his
profession and Rollins with an endowed professorship."
Orlando businessman Charles Steinmetz, a longtime
leader in the pest control industry, and his wife, Lynn,
established the Steinmetz Chair in Management to recruit
or retain a nationally recognized scholar for the
management program at the Crummer School. Steinmetz has
been a member of the Crummer Board of Overseers since
1991 and has supported many projects at the School,
including the construction of the Bush Executive
Education Center.
Certo earned his bachelor of arts degree from the
University of Cincinnati, and his MBA and doctorate from
Ohio University. Prior to joining the Crummer faculty in
1986, he taught at Ohio University, the University of
Hawaii and Indiana State University. During his career,
Certo has published in professional journals such as
Academy of Management Review, Journal of
Experiential Learning and Simulation, and Training. He
has also published over 25 books. Modern Management
(9th edition), his most widely accepted text published
by Prentice Hall, has been a best seller for over 20
years. Certo also recently co-authored the successful
trade book Digital Dimensioning: Finding the
eBusiness in Your Business. Certo is a recognized
pioneer and leader in publishing on the Internet, making
The Strategic Management Process available online
to his students. His books have been translated into
Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and Romanian for
distribution throughout the world.
As a former dean of the Crummer School, Certo
spearheaded the Global Business Student Summit and the
establishment of international student internships that
serve as the foundation of Crummer's present
international focus. The Academy of Management has
recognized his contribution with the Excellence of
Leadership Award. He sits on the boards of Federal Trust
Bank, Websolvers, Inc., and Strategic Story Studios.
Certo's management consulting experience includes CBS,
Red Lobster Restaurants and Harcourt, Inc.
"I am extremely honored and personally excited to be
the first recipient of the Steinmetz Chair of
Management. With all of the truly outstanding professors
at the Crummer Graduate School, I feel very fortunate to
have been selected," said Certo. "As the Steinmetz
Professor of Management, I can only hope to relate to
students the keen business acumen and high moral and
ethical standards that have made Charles Steinmetz a
world-class entrepreneur and manager."
