Rollins Teams Represent at Heart Walk

October 06, 2010

Thousands of people turned out at Loch Haven Park this past Saturday morning for Heart Walk, an American Heart Association event that raised $1 million. Over 11,000 people—including five Rollins teams with nearly 40 team members—sprinted, jogged and walked the three-mile course.

As part of the Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program, for which the American Heart Association (AHA) recognized Rollins for embracing earlier this year, Human Resources Manager David Zajchowski sent an invitation to faculty, staff and student to join the Heart Walk. The Rollins teams, led by David Zajchowski, Sherry Lewis, L. Ryan Musgrave, Sherry Orr and Anthony Wehrer, collectively raised more than $2,000.

Hamilton Holt Student Government Public Relations and Events Director Sherry Lewis and Hamilton Holt Community Service Chair Julia Pringle decided, along with their executive board, that this would be an excellent community service project for Holt students. “We both have a passion for supporting the American Heart Association,” said Lewis. Lewis lost her husband suddenly due to a heart attack and Pringle's son was born with a heart defect.

Assistant Professor of Art Dawn Roe walked for Team Dyno-Mite. “It was important to me to participate in this event as I work with stroke survivors through my work with The Photograph as Language course, which pairs Rollins students with people with aphasia,” said Roe. “I think participating in these types of events as members of the Rollins faculty/staff strengthens our sense of community and encourages us to engage in the greater Orlando community, of which we are a part.”

Heart Walk, which aimed to accomplish two goals — raise funds for the American Heart Association and increase awareness about the benefits of adopting a healthier lifestyle — is the American Heart Association's largest Orlando fundraiser each year.

“The day of the event was lovely,” said Roe. “It was great to see such a large turnout, and it was especially meaningful to participate in this event with respected colleagues and friends.”

”It was an amazing crowd,” said Administrative Assistant for the Rollins College Department of Music Sherry Orr. “I have already had a team member say she is looking forward to next year.”
