Sodexo USA, Rollins College, and the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce have partnered again this year for the 2011 Helping Hands Across America campaign which will run from October 17-November 11.
All non-perishable food items donated will support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. In 2009, 741,900 people in our area received food assistance—this is a 152 percent increase from 2006. In any given week, approximately 55,000 different people receive emergency food assistance.
With a growing local need, our goal this year is to collect 20,000 pounds of non-perishable food to help those in our local community. Last year Rollins College collected a total of 16,201 pounds of food. This year we have set a goal that will help us make an even greater impact.
Second Harvest collection bins will be located at the Cornell Café, Dianne’s Café, C-Store, Alfond Sports Complex, Crummer, Holt School, Residential Life Office, Campus Security and Chase Hall. Donations can also be made at the Cornell Campus Center dining hall. Second Harvest requests no glass containers and has outlined several critical needs food items such as baby food, canned tuna, nonfat dry milk, peanut butter, oatmeal, nutritional drinks, dry beans, evaporated milk, canned vegetables, soup and fruit along with rice and pasta.
Monetary donation to the campaign can be made at any dining location on campus, or by visiting rollins.edu/osil/helpinghands.
