Rachel Newcomb, associate professor of anthropology, has
been appointed to the Diane and Michael Maher Chair of Distinguished Teaching.
Newcomb joined the Rollins faculty in 2004 and currently chairs
the Department of Anthropology and serves as director of Rollins’ new minor in Middle
Eastern and North African studies. She has received numerous recognitions for
her commitment to outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service learning, having
received the Cornell Distinguished Faculty designation in 2008 and the honor of
being awarded the 2012 Florida Campus Compact Service-Learning Faculty of the
Year.
"I'm honored to have been
awarded this chair, and excited to think about the ways I can serve Rollins in
this role, most specifically in the areas of internationalization and
service-learning initiatives," Newcomb said.
An active and dedicated member of the Rollins community, Newcomb
has served on College governance and advisory committees, advised student
organizations, and led a faculty internationalization trip to Morocco. She is the
author of numerous scholarly articles and commentaries in the popular media,
and has served as a manuscript reviewer for scholarly presses.
The Diane and Michael Maher Chair of Distinguished Teaching,
a gift from Rollins alumnus Michael Maher and the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor
Foundation, was established to honor and further the College’s reputation and efforts
in the art of teaching.
One of the many projects Newcomb is
enthusiastic about developing in her position is the Middle Eastern and North
African Studies minor. “I think this provides some wonderful opportunities for
Rollins students to learn about this crucially important region while also
gaining learning experiences that they can translate into future career
opportunities," Newcomb said.
Please join the Rollins community in congratulating Rachel Newcomb
on her appointment.
