On Wednesday, June 8, Rollins College accepted a Presidential Award as part of the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in New Orleans.

Rollins was one of only six colleges in the nation recognized with the highest award possible for dedication to community engagement. The award was given out at the closing ceremony of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service, the largest annual gathering of service and civic professionals in the world.

“It was inspiring to see the work of our dedicated students, faculty and staff honored in the presence of so many national luminaries and 'champions of service' devoted to improving the lives of others,” said Interim Provost Laurie Joyner. “This award highlights our institutional commitment to developing students who recognize their responsibility to use their talents and skills to contribute to the public good. The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) is a model on campus in terms of effectively linking curricular and co-curricular efforts to enhance student learning while meeting pressing community needs. I am extremely proud of our OCE team for their mission-driven work, focus on student development and respectful engagement of our valued community partners.”

More than 4,000 people attended the conference, including actor and activist Rosario Dawson, award-winning journalist and CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien, political consultant James Carville, author and civil rights activists Ruby Bridges and director of the White House Domestic Policy Council Melody Barnes. The Daily Show’s British Correspondent John Oliver served as the emcee.

During the SPARC Day of Community on Saturday, Aug 20, and throughout the month of September, Rollins will continue to recognize the award with a month of programs and activities related to service, including the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
