January 13 marked the beginning of the 2011 Martin Luther King , Jr. Celebration. To start off the festivities, the Alfond Sport Center hosted Step Afrika!—the world’s first professional company dedicated to stepping. The group’s high energy percussive dance and comedic interjections enthralled everyone, especially volunteers selected to join the performers on stage to learn the basics.
Stepping has its roots in the African-American fraternities and sororities of the 1900s that combined sound and movement to communicate group allegiance. This practice is inspired by the dances and rhythms of the African continent.
