Despite the rained that poured down October 13, Rollins’ local sorority Non Compis Mentis (NCM) still hosted its philanthropic event, Style Your Soul, for TOMS Shoes.
TOMS Shoes is a shoe company founded on the simple idea of One for One. For every pair purchased, the organization gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need. Its goal is to give shoes to developing countries to reduce a main cause of disease: bare feet. TOMS hopes to take a step for a better tomorrow with the simple solution of providing shoes.
Siobhan Philbin (Class of 2011) of NCM lead the event. Since NCM is a local sorority, it is able to choose its own philanthropy each year. A booth was set up in front of the Campus Center every day for two weeks before the event, preselling pairs of white canvas shoes to paint. NCM was also able to promote the event at the street fair during the Global Peach Film Festival.
Typically the shoes are around $45 through a retailer, but thanks to Fox Funds, NCM was able to sell them for only $20.
“Overall we sold about 120 shoes. That’s a big number for such a small campus,” said Philbin.
TOMS Shoes was well aware of the event; Philbin talked with Autumn Peterson of TOMS Shoes to work out event logistics. Through her, the information of the event was passed on through many other TOMS employees and community.
“These shoes were really popular,” said Philbin. “There is enough interest and support from students, faculty, and staff that we’ll probably be able to do it again next year.”
