Edward H. Cohen, professor of English, has been named the
College's third William R. Kenan, Jr., Chair.
Awarded in 1967 by the William R. Kenan, Jr., Charitable
Trust to "support a college teacher whose enthusiasm for
learning, commitment to teaching and interest in
students will make a notable contribution to the
College's undergraduate community." There was no
stipulation for a particular field of study. Previous
chairholders have included economics Professor Rufus
Burr Smith and philosophy Professor Bruce Wavell.
"Holding the chair enables me to interact with the
other Kenan professor at other selective colleges and
universities," said Cohen. "We convene to discuss the
issues that preoccupy the academic profession, and I
always come away from these meetings with insight
and—even in difficult times—with renewed faith in the
prospects for higher education."
Cohen received his bachelor's degree from the
University of Maryland, his master's degree from the
University of Iowa, and his Ph.D. from the University of
New Mexico. His research interests are in Victorian
studies. He is the director of the Master of Liberal
Studies Program.
