Transfer of Credit

The courses on any Rollins Approved or Field Study program appear on your Rollins transcript as either Rollins courses or as transfer credits, depending on the specific program. Grades earned abroad display on the transcript as letter grades (unless it is a Credit/No Credit course) and are factored into the GPA.

Courses taken on non-Rollins programs will appear as transfer credits with no grades and will not factor into your GPA.

All students must complete a Study Abroad Transfer Credit Pre-Approval Form before departure in order to receive credit for courses taken on any program. Courses must be approved by the appropriate department and/or the Registrar for major or minor requirements, rFLA and Competencies. Credit is not awarded for coursework not typically offered in a liberal arts college.

Two Semesters Abroad

Students who wish to spend two semesters abroad on Rollins Approved Programs will be permitted to use Rollins institutional scholarships and grants towards both programs only if one of the two programs is an exchange program.  If neither semester program is an exchange, the student may still participate in both , but Rollins scholarships and institutional aid will not apply to the cost of the second program. Federal and State Financial Aid will still apply.

Transfer Students

Transfer students can study abroad, even for a full semester, but must plan carefully with their academic advisor. Transfer students in the College of Liberal Arts must complete at least seventy (70) credits at Rollins: Rollins Approved Programs count towards this requirement. Meet with an IP advisor during your first semester at Rollins so that we can help you get started.

Residency Requirements for CLA Students

College of Liberal Arts (CLA) undergraduate students are required to be enrolled full-time in CLA (excluding Hamilton Holt School courses) during their last two (2) consecutive semesters (excluding summer terms). Rollins Approved Semester Programs count for this requirement but non-Rollins programs do not.

Participating in a Program During Your Final Semester

International Programs strongly recommends that students do NOT study abroad on any semester program during their final semester at Rollins as this will typically delay the official graduation term. Additionally, it can be difficult to guarantee that students can take courses to meet final requirements for graduation. Students should consult with an IP advisor if they wish to study abroad during their final semester.

Graduating Seniors on Summer Approved or Field Study Programs

Students can use a Field Study or Summer Program to fulfill final graduation requirements: in these cases, the official graduation date will be the term of the study abroad program (spring semester for winter and spring break field studies, and summer for approved Rollins summer programs and summer field studies).  Students may submit a petition to walk in graduation if they are within 6 credits of meeting all graduation requirements; however, the degree and any associated honors will not be conferred until the successful completion of the study abroad program.

Students who have completed all graduation requirements are allowed to participate in a field study or approved Rollins summer program ONLY in the term immediately following their final semester. In these cases, the student will graduate and have the degree conferred at the end of the final semester of study. The student will be enrolled in the program as a non-degree seeking student: grades and credits from the program will appear on the Rollins transcript. International students on a student visa may not be able to do this because of specific visa restrictions--please contact the Office of International Student and Scholar Services for more information.

Appeals to International Programs Policies

The Office of International Programs (OIP) has policies governing:

  • application and acceptance
  • program payments, scholarships, withdrawals, and cancellation fees
  • transfer and approval of grades and credits from abroad
  • student conduct for study away and program dismissals

These policies are published on the website and/or in the pre-departure materials provided to all outbound study away students. Appeals to OIP policies must be made in writing to the Director of Global Initiatives and will be considered on a case-by-case basis: contact OIP to request an appeal form. The Director may request additional information and/or request an interview with the complainant. All appeals must be addressed within one year of the original incident or action that prompts the complaint. If a complainant is not satisfied with the response, they may then appeal to the Provost, or to the appropriate appeals committee (Academic Appeals, Fee Appeals, etc.). Note that appeals to Rollins College academic policies and appeals to study away with a GPA below the minimum threshold, are submitted to the Academic Appeals Committee: OIP can help students determine the appropriate channel for the appeal process.
