Creating an Integrative Learning Agenda: Strengthening Curricular and Co-Curricular Initiatives to Produce Transformative Learning at Rollins College
History:
The Dean of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of Students Affairs (DoSA) have initiated and will serve as the administrative leadership for the creation of an integrative learning agenda designed to link planning, assessment, and budgeting around the core undergraduate mission of the College of Arts & Sciences.
The Mission Statement of the Arts & Sciences College as approved by the faculty and affirmed by the Curricular Renewal Committee reads:
“Our mission is to provide a rigorous liberal arts baccalaureate education of the highest quality, encouraging in our faculty pedagogical innovation and continued professional growth, and fostering in our students both the intellectual curiosity that underlies a desire for lifelong education and the practice of making principled, ethical decisions for functioning as responsible citizens and workers in a global society.”
In spring 2009, the Executive Committee empowered a group consisting of the Dean of the Faculty, the Dean of Student Affairs, faculty, staff, and student representatives to revisit and recommend a consensus mission statement for the Division of Student Affairs. This group crafted the following statement:
“The Division of Student Affairs at Rollins College advances the mission of the College of Arts & Sciences by collaborating with the Faculty in creating and maintaining an environment that fosters intellectual, social, and personal learning and growth for our students.
Our vision is to foster and promote a healthy and caring environment that focuses on essential learning outcomes with an emphasis on personal and social responsibility.”
The above statement was affirmed by a vote of the full A&S faculty. The sentiment among the group that reviewed the mission statements was that staff members are to operationalize the day-to-day implementation of them in ways that are most appropriate given the needs of the College and areas of expertise represented among the staff.
