Driver's Licenses
The best place to find out detailed information on where and how to get a driver’s license is directly from the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) web page.  There are several offices in the Orlando area. Check the Driver’s License Office Directory online for addresses, telephone numbers, days and operating hours of nearby offices.

There have been new procedures implemented for international students to obtain a Florida Driver's License. It has become fairly complicated.  Many international students have been denied a Florida Driver's License in the recent past because they did not have the newly required documentation.  According to the Orlando US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office as well as the Winter Park Driver's License location, all applicants should take the following with them:
  • Valid passport and visa
  • I-94 Departure Record (indicating F-1 D/S)
  • Rollins College Student ID Card
  • Current Form I-20 or DS-2019
  • A letter from the Office of International Student & Scholar Services that the student is maintaining both immigration and academic status

Timing is Everything: Obtaining Your Driver's License or Social Security Number

The State of Florida is now only issuing the license for one year at a time or for the duration of your program shown on your I-20 or DS-2019, whichever is shorter.  When you get to the DMV office, you will fill out some forms, show the above documents and proof of identity (check DMV webpage for acceptable forms of proof of identity) take a written or computer test, take a road test, pass the vision test, and pay a fee. Call the nearest DMV to ask if you need an appointment. In order to pass the written or computer test, you will need to know the U.S. safety and traffic laws and the road signs. You can find this information in the Florida Driver Handbook.

If you don’t need a driver’s license, you also have the option to get a Florida I.D. card for identification purposes.  It is easier than getting a driver’s license because you don’t need to take any tests. Of course, you cannot use your I.D. card for driving purposes. To obtain a Florida I.D, card, you need to go to a DMV office, fill out paperwork, show the above immigration documents, and pay a fee.  Check the DMV web site for more information on I.D. cards.
