A project sponsored, in part, by the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) and open to all
interested students and programs

Program Dates for 2003:
June 5 - July 3, 2003

PROJECT GOALS
|
To introduce a simple family-based water purification system in rural communities in the Dominican Republic. |
|
|
To improve the health of the residents of rural communities by providing them with a sustainable source of potable water and sanitation education. |
|
| To measure the impact of the presence of the filters on the health of the villagers. | |
| To test the long-term performance of the filters. | |
|
To provide students interested in water, health, and sanitation issues with an opportunity to work in an important research project in a safe environment. |

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
What can students do?
Students can perform chemical and microbiological water
testing and participate in epidemiological impact assessment and filter
distribution. In addition, students can develop materials for sanitation
promotion or do the actual promotion themselves if their Spanish language
skills allow.
Who can participate?
All students interested in water, health, and sanitation issues are eligible, provided that their institutions are willing to recognize their participation. Students from ACS affiliated schools are the primary target given the support that the ACS has given to the program. This project, however, can also be an ideal practicum for Public Health students from across the country.
