Distribution

To date, we have distributed about 1700 filter units in 36 communities, 800 of which were distributed in the summer of 2000. We are also making progress toward being able to assemble the filters using buckets and components that are obtained from the local market.  Given the growing demand, it is important to reduce the dependence on imported items.

Filter Research

In addition to distribution, the work in July and August of 2000 included the testing of filters that had been in use for approximately 6 months and preliminary epidemiological surveying.  The filters had been distributed in the community of Bejucal during a Service/Learning trip through Rollins College in January of 2000 .  Over the summer, Laveta Stewart and Liz Thiele revisited the filters, analyzing them for chlorine and fecal coliforms.  Rachel Woodruff and Kerry Robinson visited households for preliminary epidemiological surveying.
