Summer 2008 Field Studies

ART 365F Making Art in Scotland: This studio art course is a two week study trip to Edinburgh, Scotland during the world renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival (http://www.edfringe.com/). During the festival, the entire city is filled with people from all over the world attending cutting edge theatre, film, dance, music and assorted festival arts events. Students choose two art classes offered by Edinburgh College of Art (http://www.eca.ac.uk/eca.html) and complete a sketchbook/visual journal composed of written narrative responses and drawings that relate to the cultural events that take place during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Prerequisite: Major or Minor in Studio Art or Art History. Itinerary Highlights: Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Travel Dates: July 26 – August 9, 2008. Cost: approximately $2800 (subject to change); excluding airfare and meals, partial need-based scholarships available. Credit: Four (4) semester hours, CR/NR. Contact: D. ENV 365F Environment & Development in Costa Rica. Costa Rica provides an excellent case study in sustainable development strategies. Here we observe and analyze models of sustainability in the areas of agriculture, tourism, and ecosystem services. We visit a wide range of projects including wildlife refuges, national parks, hot springs, La Paz waterfall and organic coffee cooperatives. Itinerary Highlights: Highlights include the world famous Monteverde Cloud Forest, La Selva Biological Station, and Arenal Volcano. Co-requisite: ENV 365 Travel Dates: This field component will run from May 15 – May 29, 2008. Cost: Approximate cost is $1950 plus airfare. Credit: Two (2) semester hours, letter graded. HIS 300F Berlin: Historical and Cultural Journey. This field study in Berlin is intended to explore the various layers of German history through an exploration in Berlin and surrounding areas. A particular focus will be on aspects of Berlin’s political and cultural history from the early 1900s to the present. Topics considered include the Wilhelmine Era, Nazi Era and World War II, the two Berlins of the Cold War Era, the Berlin Wall and its aftermath, and Berlin as a global city. Dates: May 17-29, 2008 (subject to change). Cost: approximately $3400 (subject to change) Credit: Two (2) credits, letter graded. Requirements: Students enrolled in Europe since 1945 are strongly encouraged to participate in this field study; other students with relevant background may apply with permission from Prof. Chambliss or Prof. Harrell. HIS 212F Zhong Guo, Journey to the Middle Kingdom: Field Study in the People’s Republic of China Introduces Chinese history, and major aspects of Chinese society and culture, including family systems, philosophical and religious traditions, and characteristics of the writing system. Requires hiking and walking. Itinerary Highlights: The Great Wall and Forbidden City in Beijing and the modern city of Shanghai and its vicinity. As it is mainly a study tour, the majority of the days will be spent in a collage in Shanghai to study Chinese culture, language and to interact with students and local people. Travel Dates: May 12-24, 2008 (subject to change) . Cost: $2,600 (includes round-trip airfare from Orlando). Credit: Two (2) semester hours, CR/NR. Contact: Dr. Y. PSY 215F Costa Rican Mothers and Children. Come along on a spectacular Costa Rica adventure while learning about health & psychology issues facing Costa Rican women and children. We'll fly to San Jose and spend a few days helping children & families in the inner city, then travel up the mountain to the beautiful Monteverde Institute. We'll visit schools, clinics and the Cloud Forest scenery, while we develop skills in evaluating the effectiveness of community programs for mothers and children. Itinerary Highlights: San Jose, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Arenal Volcano. Requires extensive walking. Travel Dates: May 15-29, 2008 (subject to change). Cost: Approximately $2100. INT 324F Service Projects in Rural Communities: Field Study in the Dominican Republic. This course provides an opportunity to live and work alongside residents of rural communities while undertaking projects designed to improve their living conditions. The culture and history of the Dominican Republic are examined but the emphasis is on reflection about the educational value of the experience. Students may be housed with local families during their stay and should know that these communities, in the main, have no modern facilities. May require extensive hiking and walking. Travel Dates: July 9-23, 2008. Cost: Approximately $1,550, partial need-based scholarships available. Credit: Two (2) semester hours, CR/NR. Contact: Dr. P.
