Rollins In Asturias
Program Overview
Rollins College offers an opportunity to study at the University of Oviedo for an academic year or a semester. The Spanish Language and Culture Program is offered in both Fall and Spring semesters. It provides an intensive, in-depth experience in Spanish language, culture and society, and is designed for intermediate to advanced students of Spanish who are eager to improve or achieve proficiency in their language skills. The Direct Enrollment Program is offered for the academic year or Spring semester. It is for advanced or native speakers who want to take university courses in their major field of study. A third option, available in Spring semester only, will allow students to combine the Spanish Language and Culture Program and the Direct Enrollment Program.
The cost of the program is the same as Rollins College semester tuition, double room, board and fees. Most State, Federal and Rollins financial aid may be applied. For a list of semester costs click here to access A&S Student Financial Information and download the handbook. Included in the semester cost is the round-trip group flight from an East Coast departure city, room and board in a homestay, tuition, field trips and excursions. Oviedo
The city of Oviedo is situated in central Asturias at the foot of the Naranco sierra. It is a prosperous urban area with a rich, historical heritage. Oviedo is the capital of the Principality of Asturias, one of the 17 self-governing communities constitutionally forming the Kingdom of Spain, and the political, administrative, cultural and commercial center of the region. Most of the city’s Old Quarter is zoned for pedestrian traffic only, making it ideal for exploring on foot.
Asturias is situated in the far northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The Cantabrian Sea forms its northern border and the Cordillera Cantábrica its southern border. The climate is basically an Atlantic one, with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall all year round. There are three distinct regions within the principality. First, there are the mountains within the Cantabrian system where peaks rise to 8,000-foot summits in the Picos de Europa national park. A second area is one of inland sierras, narrow valleys, meadows and woodland descending from the mountains to the coasts and the third is the coastal area, with its rocky cliffs, beautiful beaches and estuaries. The area is a natural paradise, with opportunities for numerous outdoor sports, including sailing, biking, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding and skiing.
Asturias has a population of over 1.2 million inhabitants, unevenly distributed throughout its seventy- eight concejos. The cities of Gijón, Oviedo and Avilés are the most densely populated; Gijón, a seaside resort with beautiful beaches, boasts 262,000 inhabitants. Oviedo has a population of 205,000.

Academic Programs
Both the Spanish Language and Culture program and the Direct Enrollment program are located at the University of Oviedo. Now a major university boasting more than 44,000 students enrolled in thirty five departments, the University of Oviedo was founded in 1574 and opened its doors in 1608 to one hundred students.
Spanish Language and Culture Program Courses
Students who complete the Spanish Language and Culture Program earn academic credit equal to twenty to twenty four credit hours. The letter designation after the course title indicates the general education requirement fulfilled at Rollins. Rollins students who are majoring in Spanish may apply up to three of their courses in Oviedo with the exception of Spanish Literature. Rollins students minoring in Spanish may apply up to two of their courses in Oviedo with the exception of Spanish Literature.
Fall Semester students enroll in a one-month Spanish language immersion course at Centro Británico/Centro Español (CBCE), a small language school in Oviedo. You will enroll in either OVD 311 or OVD 411, depending on your Spanish level, and earn four (4) credits for this course. Spring Semester students do not enroll in CBCE.
All students enroll in five courses in Cursos de Espanol Para Extranjeros (CEPE) at the University of Oviedo. All of the courses are taught in Spanish, and receive four semester hours of credit. Courses earn general education requirements as indicated. The courses are as follows:
Intermediate Level:
Advanced Level:
An added benefit of the program is the conversation partner program, a pairing of U.S. students with Spanish conversation partners. Through regular meetings with a partner, students not only reinforce aspects of formal language study, but also make a closer, more direct contact with Spanish students.
Direct Enrollment Program
Students who complete the Direct Enrollment program receive a total of eighteen to twenty-two semester hours credit for the Spring Semester, and approximately forty semester hour credits for the Academic Year.
Fall semester classes begin at the University of Oviedo at the beginning of October and run until the beginning of February. Spring semester classes begin at the end of February and run until the first week in June.
Courses are available in the following disciplines:

Combined Track: Direct Enrollment/Spanish Language and Culture
Students at an advanced level of Spanish who are not prepared for only the direct enrollment option, may, at the discretion of the program director, opt to enroll in courses in both programs, or enroll in Spanish Language and Culture classes for the Fall, and Direct Enrollment for the Spring.
Field Trips / Excursions
As a necessary complement to classroom teaching, a varied recreational and cultural program is offered. It includes visits to the most interesting places of the city and its surroundings, excursions to the seaside and mountains, as well as to the prehistoric and historic monuments of the region.
In these excursions, lecturers and university students guide foreign students. By means of the MENTOR Program, foreign students can take advantage of the help of a Spanish student from their same campus to settle into university life. The host student will give advice on accommodation, campus life and other practical matters. Other activities included in the program are a welcome party, literary competitions and video screenings.
Faculty and Staff
Classes are taught by specialized Ph.D. lecturers from the University of Oviedo. They offer individual tutorials to their foreign students. In addition to their academic degree, experience and interest are also taken into account in the selection of teaching staff for this program. Student helpers collaborate in the recreational and cultural activities, and as a result, foreign students settle easily in Oviedo's university life. Our resident director in Asturias in Dr. Francisco Borge.
Housing
Living with Spanish hosts during the term is an integral part of the program; it gives students an inside perspective on Spanish society not available in a dorm room. Students complete a housing questionnaire as part of their application, and after acceptance are carefully matched with families or single adults who are eager to welcome students into their homes. The host provides a room, three meals per day, laundry service, and all linens and towels. Students are considered a member of the family.
