Thaddeus Seymour came to Rollins in 1978 as the twelfth president of the College. During his twelve-year tenure, he not only transformed the school through fund-raising efforts, but also enhanced academic excellence of liberal arts education and strengthened the relationship with the local community. Throughout his life, Seymour is widely known not only as dean and college president, but also an inspiring teacher, a caring counselor, a supportive friend, and a leading citizen of the community. In 1994, Seymour received the Citizens Award from the Sullivan Committee. Three years later, in 1997, he and his wife, Polly, became Winter Park’s Citizens of the Year, in recognition of their continued service in the community.
The Thaddeus Seymour Staff Award for Community Engagement
was established in 2006 as a means of recognizing Rollins staff members for sustainable and demonstrated service in local and global communities. In the spirit of Rollins College’s mission of Global Citizenship and Responsible Leadership
this award is to be granted annually to the individual staff member whose leadership, dedication and commitment has created positive, socially just, creative, and focused ways of transforming the lives of the people, events, and environments in local and global communities.Eligibility
- All regular staff scheduled to work at least 1000 hours per year
- Must have completed 2 or more years of service to the College
- Must not have been selected as the award’s recipient in the past 5 years (past recipients)
- Sustainable commitment to an area, issue, or population in the local and/or global community.
- Demonstrated community service, active citizenship, and activism.
- Commitment beyond “positional leadership”; focusing on grassroots and action-oriented activities, programs, and methods to create sustainable change in the community through the lens of service, leadership, diversity.
- Commitment to social change, global citizenship, and responsible leadership throughout professional and personal life.
Nominations will be accepted from all faculty and staff. The nomination screening process will commence in April and the award recipient will be announced in May. The award recipient will receive:
- Recognition at the Service Awards Celebration in May
- An individualized plaque
- Have their name engraved on the Thaddeus A. Seymour Staff Award for Community Engagement plaque maintained by the College
- $500 to be given in honor of the recipient to the community organization of his/her choice intended to further action-oriented activities, programs, and methods to create sustainable change in the community through the lens of service, leadership, diversity.
The nomination process for 2011-12 is now closed. Nominations are accepted each year in the Spring. An announcement will be made at that time.
