Functional Area Suggestions

Below are responses to submitted suggestions reviewed by the administration.  Please note that duplicate suggestions were consolidated.

Parking at Orlando International Airport

Since we have a number of faculty and staff that travel for business, the College should look at establishing a corporate account with The Parking Spot (http://www.theparkingspot.com) to reduce the cost of parking at the Orlando International Airport.  According to their website, it costs $8.95/day for open-air parking and $11.95/day for covered parking (regular prices, not discounted, does not include 16.5% tax & airport fees).  It currently costs $17.00/day to park at the Orlando International Airport.

Motion Detector Switches

I have noticed that motion detection switches have been in place in some locations on campus, such as the main entrance restrooms in the Campus Center. It has no doubt provided some savings in electrical cost for the college along with other locations they are being used. This type of switch seems to be a good application where there are occasional, or intermitted uses of a space where lighting is not required continuously and is not wide spread. I would like to suggest that this would be a good way to save on electrical costs in the Alfond Sports Center, specifically in the locker room areas. These areas are currently often left lighted 24/7 simply because the switch is not turned off when the last person has left. Automatic switches would eliminate this waste and ultimately provide a savings for the college in the long term.

How about install a couple of motion sensored switch to control the lights in the archival stacks? Since the area is limited to staff, and is accessed only when materials are retrieved and filed back, the measure will save energy for the college in the long run.

We have notified Facilities Management and they have placed these two locations on their on-going list to replace these switches across the campus.

Recycling

Rollins College has a very well thought out and thorough recycling program in place on campus. I would like to make one suggestion that could increase the amount of waste product that actually makes it's way to be recycled, as well as the students and others participation in the program. Dual receptacles for collection of recycling and waste, side-by-side would provide the immediate option to recycle when an individual is looking to discard a waste item. Otherwise, a recyclable item may end up in waste, or vise versa, which causes issues with food/liquid, etc. combining with the recyclable product. I see it every day! Side-by-side receptacles provide immediate access without having to walk to separate location to dispose of an item. Currently, separate receptacles are in use throughout most of campus and the depositors are not always using great discretion when choosing where to drop an item. It makes good sense and would provide some cost benefit for the college I'm sure.

Response from Facilities Management: Side-by-side waste and recycling collection is already the goal of the College, and in many locations is a reality on campus.  We continue to work towards this goal but it is costly in  part because of new receptacles.  Unfortunately recycling does not save us money on the contrary it costs more for collection and disposal, but it is the right thing to do and we are committed to it.  As an aside we've recently went operational with the new cardboard Baylor which will result in the recycling of thousands of pounds of cardboard every week. 

Events Scheduling

Purchase more 6' long tables for the college to use.  Every year for numerous events our office has to rent tables, which for the cost of renting them for one or two events we have MORE than paid for tables that the college could own.  Seems like a waste of budget to me.

The College has committed funds for the purchase of tables and chairs for events at the College.  You will no longer need to rent tables and chairs for your events.  Contact Special Event scheduling to book your events.  Thank you for your suggestion.

Electricity

Add motion detectors/sensors for rooms that will turn off lights when no activity in the room.

The College committed funds towards the purchase and installation of occupancy sensors to control room lighting and in some cases control environmental systems.  While this is already our practice with recent new construction projects, this will now allow us to retrofit some existing facilities.  Priority will be given first to classrooms then to conference rooms as these areas were shown to hold the greatest potential for savings in a recent campus survey.

Centralized Exterior Lighting Control - in order to provide a safe and accessible campus we have many hundreds of exterior lights.  In the past some of them have been controlled by individual photocells, some by timers, and some by user controlled switches.  In the last several years we have been in the process of converting to central control as part of our computerized building automation system.  We now have approximately 60% of these lights controlled with the system allowing us to ensure that they are on when needed and off the rest of the time.  You may from time to time observe some of these lights on during the day. This is done for servicing in order to avoid bringing personnel in after hours at overtime rates.

Bicycle Program

Eco-Rollins and the Recycling program are working on a proposal to present to V.P. Eisenbarth and President Duncan for a 'bicycle library' program. Have upwards of 20 bikes to start that can be checked out and used for local bicycling....on campus and downtown Winter Park. Help to keep students from using their cars to drive from one side of the campus to the other or down Park Avenue. Bicycles could down the road reduce the need for more parking lots, reduce the traffic on Holt Avenue and reduce the impact on our roads. Long run.....improve health of students, faculty and staff who use bicycles....in turn quite possibly reduce health costs!

The College has approved and funded this program.  It will be launched by the members of Eco-Rollins and the Recycling program in the Fall.

Centralize Provider of Office Supplies

Purchasing will be soliciting bids for office supplies within the next 60 days, with the expectation of receiving greater discounts, and less labor intensive invoicing and payment methods.  Once this project is completed, Purchasing will communicate the advantages and cost savings to the campus community.  It is hoped the lower pricing and increased ease in purchasing will be enough incentive for employees to shop wisely.

Gym

Gym/workout area needs renovation

The College purchased 3 new Life Fitness bikes over the holidays, 2 new Life Fitness treadmills and 2 new Life Fitness Ellipticals.  Plans are to replace equipment on a rotational basis.

Bottled Water

Eliminate bottled water coolers

Although it may be difficult to eliminate bottled water coolers, the purchasing department did solicit bids from bottled water companies resulting in a 50% reduction in cost. The resulting agreement does not include individual bottles purchased from the preferred vendor or other sources, which are more costly and produce a considerable amount of plastic waste.  However, as part of the College's effort to promote sustainability, the College provided students with reusable water bottles at the recent celebration to the opening of the new web site pages and branding.

Bookstore

Rental of books rather than purchase books

Textbook rental programs can offer the potential for savings on the part of the student.

Textbook rental programs work best when they service classes with large, predictable enrollments and conversely do not work well for courses that have small enrollments.    They typically require the faculty to commit to adopting textbooks for a period of two to five years.  The startup costs are significant and there are ongoing administrative, maintenance and inventory costs plus the cost of additional space for storage.

Turn off lights in the Bookstore

With the exception of the recessed lighting by the fireplace, which is left on the lowest level, all lighting will be turned off each evening in the bookstore.

Allowing different options for meal plan

Dining remains a key element of every successful residential college program, and is particularly critical to the success of four year colleges.  Our flexible dining environment supports our aspirations for building community in the residential setting and allows us to provide top quality products. 

It is expected that students will eat most of their meals in the dining facilities unless they live off campus or live in Sutton, where they are exempt from the meal plan. The current all-declining balance meal is intended to be both easy and economical.  With its unlimited use at any dining facility, at any time, the declining balance program is compatible with our active student's lifestyle and unpredictable eating patterns.  The current cost allocation is meant to represent approximately 12-14 average meals per week.  Students who choose to eat more frequently on campus or purchase larger quantities of food have the option to add funds to their FLEX account.  Students who choose to eat many of their meals off campus or are extremely light eaters may feel the cost is excessive but the plan is meant to meet the needs of the majority. An extensive study was recently conducted which showed Rollins College meal plan cost is competitive with peer institutions.  Last fiscal year, 98.2% of all meal plan dollars were expended by the end of the spring term.

Dining Services regularly compares its pricing to the market price, specifically through a formalized “Right Pricing” process. Rollins College continues to charge less than the Winter Park market price.

Waterless Urinals

Rollins installed its first waterless urinal in the Cornell Campus Center in 2001 after a successful trial it was adopted as the standard for all new construction and renovation projects on campus, we now have nearly 100 campus-wide.  They utilize a fluid trap that allows urine to pass into the sanitary system without the need of water flush saving up to 20,000 gallons per unit annually. 

Landscaping/Sod Replacement/ Sprinkler System/ Native Plants/ Fertilizers

Many suggestions were submitted in regards to Rollins landscaping: sod replacement, sprinkling the lawn, adding native plants and the usage of fertilizers.

Rollins College operates in a competitive environment where students have choices.  Over the last decade we have invested in our grounds to create the kind of environment that students and parents expect for an institution of our caliber. It is widely understood and documented that perspective students make final school decisions in part based on curb appeal.  Therefore it is critical to our recruitment efforts that the College look and feel welcoming for our students to want to come to Rollins.  Students who come to Rollins will live and learn in one of the most beautiful settings anywhere. Our goal is not only to provide a first-rate natural environment, but to do it in the most efficient and responsible fashion.

We put a great deal of emphasis on “smart landscaping”. Over the years we have simplified our plant palette concentrating on reducing general maintenance activities, water consumption, fertilizer and pesticide use. We also utilize slow release, lower nitrogen fertilizers that contain no phosphorus. During the past five years we have greatly improved the aesthetics of our outdoor spaces. Through good design and maintenance practices we have been able to reduce water usage and chemical use by 50%. Usage of approved non potable water sources (lake and wells) allows us to avoid the costs associated with purchasing water from city sources.

The College is committed to the both the preservation of and reintroduction of native plants into our landscapes. Nowhere is this more evident than our lake front. During the past several years we have been successful in eliminating many of the non-native invasive species along the lakeshore and are currently partnering with both city and state agencies to improve and sustain the health of our lakes. We have planted groupings of cypress along with native aquatic and shrub plantings, and other native trees to aid in the reestablishment of a natural and native lakeshore.

Renting Space/Catering

We should charge outside groups a fee to rent our space and use our catering services

The College does charge a fee for outside groups to use our facilities.  Our catering services has the first right of refusal for functions at the College.

Sandspur

The Sandspur is not read by the majority of campus. All those printed copies of the unread campus newspapers go to waste.

The Sandspur has been online for some time http://www.thesandspur.org/, and now that it is being regularly updated each week, we are reducing the amount of printed issues we publish each week.  Right now we publish 800 issues per week, about 100 of which remain not picked up.  This clearly demonstrates that a majority of the campus reads the hard copies of the paper.  We will not be eliminating hard copies all together as they are an integral part of our advertising revenue, provide clippings for students and reporters to highlight their accomplishment, and are more fulfilling to read than online.  However, we will continue to reduce the amount printed each week until we see that nearly all hard copies have been taken.  The paper is printed on recycled paper, and any copies left over get recycled as well.

Library

A survey of library usage may indicate that it is open during some hours when usage is very low

The Library continuously collects data on how many people enter the building. This indicates that the building is being used pretty consistently although there are obviously some busier times.  There have been many suggestions from students that they would like to have increased hours in the library.  SGA is currently reviewing these requests at this time.
