Gabriel Ignacio Barreneche, PhD

Dr. Gabriel Barreneche received his B.A. degree in Spanish and International Studies from Boston College and participated in that institution’s study abroad program at the Universidad de San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador. After completing his undergraduate degree, Dr. Barreneche moved to San Diego, California, and worked in a housing program for migrant farm workers through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. He then returned to academia and completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Barreneche’s academic interests include contemporary Caribbean and Latin American literature, U.S. Latino literature, as well as instructional technology.

Rosana Díaz Zambrana

Dr. Rosana Díaz-Zambrana completed her B.A. in Comparative Literature at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez where she was born and raised. She earned her M.A. & Ph.D. degrees at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, also in Comparative Literature. She focused her studies on Modern Latin American Literature, more particularly, on contemporary Brazilian and Southern Cone narratives. Before coming to Rollins, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She has presented papers in national and international conferences on memory, exile and the notions of home in contemporary authors. Her teaching interests include Latin American narratives that deal with trauma and memory; film and culture.

Alberto Prieto-Calixto

Licenciado en Filosofía y Letras Universidad de Valladolid, Spain. M. A. in Spanish, Arizona State University. Ph. D. in Spanish, Vanderbilt University. Professor Prieto-Calixto’s main areas of research include Golden Age, Colonial and Asturian studies. In addition to numerous articles and presentations on literature, film, culture, history, immigration and pedagogy, he has published a book about the theme of captivity during the XVI-XVII centuries in the Hispanic world, Héroes, prisioneros y renegados: el cautiverio en la narrativa hispánica de los siglos XVI-XVII (2009). His current research projects include a book about the Asturian immigration to the US and a study about Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Professor Prieto-Calixto is Director in Residence of Verano Español (Rollins’s Summer program in Spain).

Patricia Tomé, PhD

Dr. Patricia Tomé received her B.A. in Spanish and Journalism from Rutgers University. After completing her degree, she worked as a journalist at Univisión, a Spanish-language TV network in New York. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. She has taught at Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Oklahoma City Community College and Instituto de Línguas in Vitória, Brazil. Her teaching interests include 20th and 21st century Latin American Literature, Cuban and Cuban American literatures and film, and modern Latin American and Peninsular drama.

Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, University of Central Florida. Master of Arts in Spanish, University of Central Florida. She focused her studies on foreign language education, Latin American literature and Spanish linguistics. Before starting her teaching career at Rollins College, Ms. Morales taught Spanish in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program with Seminole County Public Schools for two and a half years and holds a professional teaching certificate in Spanish from the state of Florida. Her interests include second language acquisition and Hispanic literature in the U.S.

José Holguín-Intriago received his B.A. in English Literature, and B.A. and M.A. in Spanish from the University of Central Florida. His teaching philosophy is that, in order for students to learn a language successfully, they must be challenged and immersed in the language and culture. His academic interests include teaching with technology, creative writing, and gender studies in Spanish and Latin American literature.

Rachael Lilienthal received an M.A. in Hispanic Literatures from Florida State University. She received a B.A. in Anthropology and a Certificate in Latin American Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She has taught Spanish at Valencia Community College, Florida State University, and Reading Area Community College. She has also taught English as a Foreign Language and has served as a volunteer in Ecuador through Harvard University’s WorldTeach program. As an undergraduate, she studied abroad in Mexico and also attended a Semester at Sea through the University of Pittsburgh. Her academic interests focus on Latin American literatures and cultures.

María Paniagua-Tejo, MA

María R. Paniagua-Tejo received her B.A. from Rollins College and her M.A. in Spanish from the University of Central Florida. At Rollins she teaches courses at all levels of Spanish language and Introduction to Hispanic literature. She has teaching experience at Pitzer College (SILC), Vanderbilt University and University of Central Florida. Her research interests include Medieval Spanish Literature, Contemporary Spanish Literature, and Hispanic Culture. She has presented several papers in national and international conferences.

 Yona Smith

Yona Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Central Florida and her Master of Arts in the Teaching of Language from the University of Southern Mississippi, focusing not only on the Spanish language, but also language acquisition and methodologies of teaching language. Ms. Smith also holds a national board certification in world languages other than English (emphasis Spanish) as well as a professional teaching certificate in Spanish for the state of Florida.  Her academic interests include second language acquisition and the pedagogical strategies of language instruction.

Jessica Jacob

Jessica Jacob is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico but has also spent a significant amount of time in California and Oregon. She received her B.A. in Spanish with a minor in French from Southern Oregon University in 2008, and her M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics from The University of Alabama. Her primary interests are in Second Language Development and Pedagogy. Some of her research includes analyzing the correlation between second language input and phonology, as well as the association between mimicry skills and pronunciation skills. Mrs. Jacob adheres to a Communicative Language Teaching approach that emphasizes student interaction and incorporates authenticity in the teaching of Spanish Language and Culture.
