The 2005
Drey Shakespeare Summer Institute at Rollins College

The Florida Center for Shakespeare Studies at Rollins College invites
you to apply for the Drey Shakespeare Summer Institute, a two-week program exploring the veneer of civilization as it relates to the bounderiesand bonds of youth and old age in King Lear and Romeo and Juliet.
During this period, we will use the resources of Rollins College in Winter
Park and an array of guest artists and lecturers to focus on how social,
cultural, and religious issues can be examined together with rhetorical,
literary, and theatrical techniques.
The Institute will emphasize intense text and script study. Because
the value of classical drama lies in the ways in which its literary and
dramatic qualities engage audiences in the issues it raises, the Institute
will focus on such literary techniques and dramatic devices as music, language,
costume, props, and space.
All participants will experience directing, acting, and technical activities
as they move towards producing selective scenes. In addition to developing
theoretical and practical skills for the classroom, participants work in
teams to develop teaching materials that can be disseminated throughout
the state of Florida.
During the years 1997-99, Drey participants have worked with The
Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet,
The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, andAs You Like
It, and under the direction of Professors Omans and O’Sullivan have
produced the teaching text Shakespeare Plays The Classroom. This year, the institute will be concentrating on issues related to the family in Romeo and Juliet and King Lear.
