Ashley Kistler, PhD

Dr. Ashley Kistler joined the Department of Anthropology and Latin American and Caribbean Studies program at Rollins in 2008. She is an ethnographer and linguist who has done fieldwork in Maya communities in Mexico and Guatemala for nearly two decades. At Rollins, Dr. Kistler teaches classes on the Maya, Latin American and Caribbean culture, linguistic anthropology, and the history and culture of Rollins. Dr. Kistler has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on her research in Guatemala. Her first book, Maya Market Women (2014), considers how indigenous women in highland Guatemala transform their gendered status and enact local ideas of what family is through their involvement in market sales. Her second book, Faces of Resistance: Maya, Heroes, Power, and Identity, is an edited volume that explores how stories of heroic figures have served as narratives of resistance and markers of identity for indigenous communities in Mexico and Guatemala. Recently, Dr. Kistler has served as an expert witness in Guatemala in asylum cases in immigration courts across the country. She has been recognized for her teaching, research, and service with a Cornell Distinguished Faculty Award in 2013 and a Bornstein Award in 2019.

Amy Armenia joined the Department of Sociology in 2014, having previously taught at Randolph-Macon College and Hofstra University. She teaches Sociology of the Family, Race and Ethnic Relations, Sociological Theory, and Statistics and Data Analysis. She is a quantitative sociologist whose scholarship focuses on the intersection of the family and market, looking both at how parents balance work and family, and the challenges and contradictions faced by those who do paid care work (e.g., child care, elder care, health care). She has published her work in the journals Work and Occupations, Journal of Family Issues, Journal of Applied Social Science, Social Science Quarterly, and Social Science Research. She was co-editor of Caring on the Clock: The Complexities and Contradictions of Paid Care Work (Rutgers University Press, 2015) and is currently co-editing Confronting the Global Care Crisis during COVID-19: Past Problems, New Issues, and Pathways to Change (Rutgers University Press, in progress). Her contributions to the college via teaching, scholarship, and service were recognized with an Arthur Vining Davis fellowship in 2018.

Janette has been working at the College for over 16 years, and a member of the Dean's Office since 2010. She graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Organizational Behavior and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Liberal Arts.

As of early 2022, Lauren has been serving as the Advising Coordinator in the Office of Academic Advising. She is currently seeking a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the Hamilton Holt School at Rollins College. Additionally, Lauren has earned a Bachelors of Art in International Relations from Rollins College in 2020.
