TEACHING RECORD
Courses Taught at Rollins
COM 510: Corporate Communication, Small Groups, and Work Teams:
a graduate course on communication practices in small groups and work
teams. Students learn to examine and to write about their own and others'
group communication practices more thoughtfully and more critically.
COM 395: Communication Research: a survey course on quantitative
and qualitative research methods as both arts and sciences.
COM 220: Interpersonal Communication: a course on communication
in close relationships. Students examine issues critical to relationship
studies (e.g. identity, perception, language, listening, and conflict) and
develop and share creative projects that explore the intricacies,
complexities, ironies, and contingencies of living in communion others,
including family members, friends, and lovers.
COM 120: Small Groups and Leadership: a course aimed at helping
students understand, apply, evaluate, and use concepts, theories, and
skills related to various aspects of group life (e.g. group formation,
group maintenance and cohesion, group dynamics, group member roles and
leadership, and "groupthink").
Other Courses Taught
Communication, Gender, and Identity: a course on the interactive
relationship between gender and communication. Learning to use both
rhetorical and interpersonal theories, students explore how communication
practices in institutions such as the family, education, the workplace,
and the media create, reinforce, challenge, and alter gendered identities,
roles, and rules.
Communication and Society (Media Studies): a survey course
examining the history, structure, and function of various print and
electronic media. By emphasizing the interconnectedness of communication
and mass communications, this class elucidates how media help construct
and transform personal identity, the meanings of romance and interpersonal
relationships, and conceptions of gender, culture, class, and sexuality.
Family Communication: a course on the family as constructed and
experienced. Students are exposed to theories (such as symbolic
interaction, systems, social construction, and dialectics) that help them
understand family process. They examine their own and others' families as
complex sites for making and remaking identity, relationships, and
meaning.
Relationships on Film: a course using film to teach theories of
communication and close relationships. By examining both popular and
independent films, students come to understand how we live in what Norman
Denzin calls "a cinematic society," where media texts preview,
frame, and even replace relational experience.
Public Speaking: a course intended to improve proficiency in
oral communication. Students learn how to research, construct, and perform
various kinds of speeches. To help them enter a global society, listening,
audience analysis, communication ethics, and cultural diversity also are
emphasized.
