Communication courses have been offered at Rollins since the College was founded in 1885. In 1985, exactly 100 years after the first classes were held on the Rollins campus, the Hamilton Holt School established an organizational communication major and the College of Arts & Sciences created a communication minor. In the fall 2012 we will offer a new major in Communication Studies.
The Department of Communication provides students with the tools to understand how communication functions, how we use it to create meaning, and how to interpret the messages we receive.
The purpose of the event was to bring together students and faculty in the Department of Communication for an upbeat opportunity to mingle, to learn about department
all activities, and to showcase successful ventures in student - faculty collaborative research programs. The marketing, arrangements, and hospitality for the event was planned by students enrolled in COM 130: Event Planning and Communication, taught by Professor Carolyn Planck. Program participants included:
Dr. John Morrison and Yevgueni Vyskrebentsev, examined the “flash mob” as a unique social phenomenon that can serve as a form of political expression in repressive societies;
Dr. Anne Stone and Meredith Lax , presented their research on the role communication plays in improving care for persons living in nursing care facilities;
Dr. Greg Cavenaugh with Drew Phillips and Elissa DeCampli, presented their research on how caregivers for children with autism spectrum disorders give and receive social support;
Dr. Ted Gournelos and Danae Zimmer, presented their research on the role of economic and gender politics in the way we view human trafficking ; and
Dr. Ted Gournelos with Courtney Banker presented the role that TED Talks play in contemporary education.
