Dean Debra Wellman is currently serving as the Interim Dean of the College of Professional Studies at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. She has served the college in the roles of Interim Dean of the Faculty and as Associate Dean of the Faculty. She is an associate professor in the education department. Her research areas include literature circles, children’s literature, reading strategies, responding to literature and issues in diversity. Her current research interests are boy’s book clubs and alternative assessment strategies.
Dean Wellman has received accolades for her teaching abilities. She has been nominated to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers by four of her former junior high students. In 2002, she received “Most Recognized Professor” from the Rollins students in 2004, she was awarded the Hugh F. McKean Award for Outstanding Teaching Skills from the Rollins’ graduating class of 2004.
Dean Wellman received her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Toledo, her M.S. in education administration from Eastern Illinois University and her B.S. in elementary education and physical education from Illinois College. Although she has had the opportunity to teach every grade, the majority of her 15 years were spent teaching sixth, seventh, and eight grade language arts and social studies and coaching basketball, volleyball and track.
